Curriculum Letter - All About Me
SJI International Elementary, Singapore, 16th January 2015
Prep 1 are about to embark on an amazing journey where they discover all about themselves, their family and their friends. We will begin this unit next week by looking at photographs of the teachers and their families and thinking about our own family.
This unit is part of the Early Years International Primary Curriculum programme and covers four strands of learning – these are called ‘Independence and Interdependence’, ‘Communicating’, ‘Exploring’ and ‘Healthy Living’.
The activities which have been planned will cover these strands in the following ways.
Independence and Interdependence
During these first few weeks the children will continue to learn about life at school. The children will learn to become more independent by unpacking their belongings and following the class routines and activities like “Read to Self”. We will learn about the best way to respond to each other using the language of virtues such as courtesy and respect, including strategies for negotiating and sharing equipment. The children will be introduced to activities to develop new skills and have opportunities to play independently and alongside other children.
The children will be sharing stories and information about themselves and learning how to label information. During this unit the children will begin to learn the sounds letters make through Jolly Phonics and will also be looking at correct letter formation through our new handwriting program. We will focus on pre-writing skills using tactile resources such as sand, pipe cleaners, string, playdough and other materials. The children will learn the importance of taking turns in speaking and listening. They will be introduced to our home reading program and the notion of “Just Right” books for interest. They will listen to stories and use the iPads. We will be involved in making class books together. We will sing and learn some simple action rhymes.
In Mathematics we will be matching and sorting objects. The children will collect and organise data into picture graphs and will focus on numbers 1-10, counting, recognising and writing the numerals.
The children will be exploring what they can do and what they look like, and celebrate how we are all unique. We will learn more about our body parts, both inside and out. Throughout these early days the children will learn about playing with materials such as sand and water and explore play activities that are very tactile and help with hand-eye coordination. They will be involved in learning some basic processes of art and craft.
The children will begin to learn about paying attention and concentrating as well as expressing emotions and emotional needs. Each day will bring opportunities to develop the ability to cope with change. The children will also understand the importance of personal hygiene and how to wash their hands properly at appropriate times during the day.
The children’s specialist teachers have planned the following activities:
In Music, we will begin a unit titled “Meet the Band”. Pupils will meet Dennis the Drum and friends and will develop knowledge, skills and understanding of a variety of percussion instruments. Pupils will have the opportunity to use the singing and speaking voice; explore instruments and sounds; and create and design their own music.
In PE this term, we will be introducing the children to the Fundamental movement skills, including the ‘A, B,C’s (Agility Balance and Coordination). The children will be:
- Learning to move in different ways with control and coordination
- Learning to listen to instructions and respond quickly in ‘start-stop’ games
- Use colours and numbers to react and change the way that they move, showing their coordination in put-down and pick-up games, running and jumping games and simple catching and throwing activities
- Show improved Balance, Agility and Cooperation
The children will be developing their social skills, learning to work together and in small teams. We will develop a knowledge and understanding of the principles of movement, using our ‘Fitness Friends’, (Harry Heartbeat, Barbara Balance etc)
In Chinese, we will be working on Unit 2: All about me and celebrating Chinese New Year and we will:
- Learn numbers from one to five
- Learn self-introduction
- Learn the customs and festivities related to Chinese New Year
We hope you will support our unit of work and the international mindedness aspect by talking to the children about their home country and participating by coming into the classroom to work with your child and read a story.
If you would like to help, please contact your child’s class teacher. Looking forward to an exciting unit!
