What's Happening at DeKeyser
Nursery / Preschool
Our Preschooler are exploring their new environment and have enjoyed our "calming center". This area is available throughout their day in preschool and included soft comfortable seats, pillows, breathing boards, sensory tools, visual timers and much more to make their days at school the best they can be.
Kindergarten
This week In Kindergarten we made constitution day hats, created classroom constitutions, and talked about the importance of following rules! This has been an important topic for the littles as we are still going over class and school rules each day!
1st Grade
In an exciting week at school, our first-grade students had the wonderful opportunity to meet their future educator helpers for the year. These dedicated helpers will guide and support our young learners on their educational journey. Additionally, each first-grader was paired up with their very own fifth-grade book buddy, creating a special bond for the year ahead. This partnership promises to be a fantastic way for our students to explore the world of books and foster friendships across grade levels. We look forward to a year filled with learning, growth, and friendship!
2nd Grade
This week, 2nd graders learned about “real reading” and metacognition- thinking about thinking! We built salads to help understand the difference between reading words (text) and thinking about what we’re reading. Students are beginning to understand that to be “real readers” they should do a lot of thinking about the text as they are reading!
3rd Grade
Third graders have been learning about metacognition and how reading is thinking. This week we learned the different types of thinking; connecting, visualizing, inferring, summarizing, questioning and predicting. Students used their brain cards to indicate any time they used one of these types of thinking during our class read aloud, "What Do You Do With A Problem?". We will be working on this thinking all year!
4th Grade
Fourth graders learned about Place Value in math. They are learning to write numbers up to 1,000,000 in word form, expanded form, and standard form. In science, they worked on unplugged coding and coding on their computers. In social studies, they are learning about the 5 Themes of Geography. Mrs. Bryson, Mr. Sheridan, Mrs. Ritz and Ms. Stumpf enjoy their Professional Development.
5th Grade
In social studies we are learning about Native Americans that settled in North America and the environmental hardships that they encountered when choosing where to settle. The students had to think of themselves as the leaders of one of the tribes and were tasked with making a choice as to where they would settle and why. Their choices were based on the climate in that area and the natural resources available. Also, last week parents from 5th grade attended the PTCG meeting. As a thank you, members of the PTCG awarded popsicles to all of the students. They were excited to go outside and enjoy them together.
6th Grade
6th graders reviewed genre last week and finished the week with a book “tasting.” This is where students were able to check out a wide variety of books that are available in our classroom. Students got a chance to see what type of book interests them and keep that selected book for independent reading time.
Music
This week in first grade music class we learned and practiced conducting a steady beat.
Our older classes reviewed note values and practiced counting our beats in a measure. Before class ended we played a clapping game of "7's".
Media Center
The students at DeKeyser are buzzing with excitement! During their Media Center time this week students were able to check out their first book of the year. Don’t worry, if your child has Media Center on Wednesdays, they will get a book next week!
Art
What a WONderful Class! These Learners are exceptional listeners! What a Terrific job they did creating their Implied Texture Rough Rubbing Roads, Hot to Cool Color School Buses with a watercolor wax resist!!!!
I am So Proud to be their Art Educator!!!
Sincerely,
Mr. T.
ISM
This week in ISM we are wrapping up our Kindness Kickoff unit. We are throwing kindness like confetti by creating colorful artwork and displaying it for all to see. We did an exercise where we showed the “affect” unkind comments/actions can have by wrinkling a piece of paper… and how using kind words/actions can help smooth those sad feelings (wrinkles) away! Afterward- we created posters as a reminder that we want to spread KINDNESSES throughout DeKeyser and beyond.
We are also creating recipes for friendship and designing Friendship Pies. Our students created unique handshakes with partners to incorporate cooperative learning too! We have challenged each student to continue practicing random acts of kindness in the classroom, school, community and at home. Remind your student to use whole body listening in conversations at home too!
Gym
Greetings from the gym teachers. Mr. Baur and Ms. Hunke. Classes have been working on TEAMWORK. This is the ability to accomplish a task with the help and cooperation of all. Listening, communicating positively, taking turns, partner skills, and small group skills are all skills that are taught to lead-up to a bigger sport scenario or game. Fitness and strength are enhanced by playing PE games as well. Sixth grade has been working on Soccer and now are learning and playing football. Upper Elementary classes are currently practicing the soccer unit. Lower Elementary classes are practicing locomotor skills and skills associated while playing with others in a big group/team. Students are expected to have gym or tennis shoes to participate and ensure quality movement.
