Happy Holidays!

The first four months of school have gone by incredibly fast and here we are at the last week of school before the holiday break. We've had a busy fall to say the least; Terry Fox Walk, We Scare Hunger, Kindness Week, a variety of special presentations and many challenging learning opportunities in every classroom. We continue to be blessed with the support of our amazing parent community and for that we say THANK YOU!! Whether you are able to volunteer at the school, go on a field trip or simply ask your children about school while driving to hockey or at the dinner table, you are having a positive impact on your own children as well as all of the students at Southview.

On behalf of the entire staff, we wish you a safe and happy holiday with family and friends and we look forward to seeing everyone in the new year!

Your Admin Team,

Tiffany Mountenay & Joanne Borges

First Influenza A Confirmed Case of the Season

Please be advised that KFL&A Public Health has received laboratory confirmation of the first case of Influenza A for the 2018-2019 season. Influenza causes mild to severe illness and can lead to serious health complications, even in healthy children and adults. Immunization is the best way to prevent influenza. The influenza vaccine (flu shot) is available free of charge to anyone in Ontario over the age of 6 months. Contact your family physician or local pharmacy for your influenza vaccine if your family has not yet been immunized. Even in years when there is a strain mismatch, the flu vaccine will still offer some protection. Next to immunization, the single most important way to prevent the spread of infection is to clean hands often with soap and water or alcohol-based hand sanitizers. The symptoms of influenza include fever (greater than 38.0 degrees C/100.4 degrees F), dry cough, chills, headache, muscle aches, loss of appetite, sore throat, and runny nose. Young children may also experience nausea and vomiting with the above symptoms. Adults with influenza may be infectious for five days after the onset of their symptoms whereas children may be infectious for up to seven days. If you or your child have symptoms of influenza, it is important to stay home during the infectious period to avoid spreading the illness to others. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Communicable Disease Team at the Health Unit at 613-549-1232 ext. 2300.

Holiday Concert

Students in K to Grade 3 are excited to invite families to our Holiday Concert on Thursday, December 20th. There will be an afternoon performance at 2:30 pm as well as a performance at 6:00 pm that evening. Due to fire code regulations, there is limited seating for the evening show. Families with students in the primary division will receive 2 tickets to attend the evening show. We will be collecting non-perishable food items or loonie donations at both shows. Our students would truly appreciate it if audience members stayed for the entire show seeing as they've worked so hard to prepare!

Annual Craft Sale ~ Thank You Volunteers!

Thank you to our Parent Council for organizing another very successful Craft Sale! So many volunteer hours were spent behind the scenes to make sure this event was a success and events like this wouldn't be possible without this generous gift of time. There was such a positive "buzz" throughout the school that day and lots of happy shoppers took home special gifts for their family and friends. Many of the vendors commented on how well the event was organized and complimented us on how well behaved the students were and how sweet it was to see the older students helping the little ones do their shopping. A great day was had by all!

Looking for Cleaned & Empty K-Cup & Wrapping Paper Tube Donations

If you would like to support us by collecting your used K-Cups, cleaning them out and sending them into our donation box in the front hallway, we will use these to help us build, design, and construct. These are great tools for us to use in math, science and music!

As well, keep your holiday wrapping tubes so that in January, we can use these recyclable materials to help us with our learning. Thanks for your support of our school and for recycling these materials for our use.
