Keeping Up with Comm Arts
~ August 21, 2023 ~
Hello Comm Arts Family and Friends!
Just one more week!! Teachers are back on campus preparing for the new school year. We are excited to have students back with us soon.
Our principal, Dr. Baker, is hosting a Zoom session on Friday, August 25th, at 2 pm. The session will cover how to "do" school and other Comm Arts expectations. This is mainly for freshmen, but anyone who would like a refresher is welcome to join. See you there!
Meeting ID: 936 8746 3684
Passcode: CAHS
A newsletter will be emailed on Friday with first day procedures and important campus details.
Students will have limited access to their devices this school year. Phones, more often than not, become personal distraction devices. Unless otherwise stated, students cannot access their phones during instructional time. Student phones will need to be on silent and put away. Parents, if you need to communicate with your child, they can check their phones during the passing period and at lunch. If an emergency occurs and you need to reach your child during class time, please call the Comm Arts front office.
Transportation information should be available soon for students and parents. If you still have not received any information by Wednesday, August 23rd, please contact the Comm Arts front office. Thank you!
NISD Safety First
Northside ISD has implemented a few changes for the 23-24 school year. They include:
- No deliveries for students or faculty/staff members
- The addition of twenty fully-commissioned police officers to the NISD Police Dept.
- Access to silent panic alert technology at each school
Additionally, all students, faculty, and staff will need to wear their school IDs while on campus for safety purposes.

New Vaping LawThe Texas Legislature recently enacted HB 114, requiring all school districts to implement mandatory disciplinary alternative education program (DAEP) placement for students found in possession of, using, selling, giving, or delivering e-cigarettes or vaping devices on school grounds or at a school-related event. This alternative school placement, required by law, is made regardless of whether the substance being vaped is a controlled substance or not. | Earning HS Credits High School Credits: Students are required by law to be in attendance for 90% of each class. If students' absences exceed 90%, they will lose credit for their class unless corrected through Attendance Recovery. Excused and non-excused absences count towards the allouted amount. | Attendance MattersHealth vs. EADN (Excused Absences - Non-Health -Doctor Note): Health absences do not count against a student's attendance. However, a student must be on campus for part of the school day and bring in a doctor's note. A doctor's note counts as an excused absence if a student is absent for the whole school day. |

Exciting Opportunity for Young Journalists
The San Antonio Express-News Teen Team program gives young people in and around San Antonio a close-up view of what it's like to work in the industry. To be eligible for the program, applicants must be current high school juniors and seniors within the San Antonio region. Students from all backgrounds and experiences are encouraged to apply -- even those without prior journalism exposure. The application deadline is August 30th.
You can learn more about the program at: ExpressNews.com/TeenTeam.
PSAT Updates
Northside ISD is hosting a College Board Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test, or PSAT, on Wednesday, October 11th. The PSAT is optional this year for 10th graders. Sophomores who choose to participate must register by September 20th to participate and pay a $20 testing fee. Information on registering 10th graders for PSAT will be available on August 28th.
There is a reduced fee of $10 for students who receive free or reduced lunch. All 9th and 11th graders will be registered to take the PSAT.
Comm Arts students will have a separate registration process from Taft High School.
NISD is now using SchoolCafe for online lunch payments. Click the link for more information and videos on using the new system.
STAAR Results
STAAR EOC final assessment results for 9th graders are now available via HAC.
Dress Code Refresher
As back-to-school shopping begins, please keep the NISD district dress code in mind. Students with dress code violations will be required to change.
- Shorts of mid-thigh length may be worn at all school levels. Suggestive and/or indecent shorts will be prohibited.
- Mid-thigh length skirts, skorts, and dresses may be worn at all levels. There should not be a cut or slit in the clothing that extends above the mid-thigh. Suggestive and/or indecent styles will be prohibited. These requirements also apply to school uniforms.
- Appropriate footwear must be worn; footwear which has toes reinforced with steel, hard plastics or similar materials are specifically prohibited.
- Hair must be neat and clean. Unconventional hairstyles that distract from teaching and learning will be prohibited.
- Any clothes that are suggestive or indecent or which cause a distraction will be prohibited. Specifically, oversized clothing, tank tops, muscle shirts, halter/crop tops, spaghetti straps, exposed backs or midriffs, and see-through garments are prohibited.
- Indecent/inappropriate patches, writings, or drawings on clothing are prohibited. Undergarments must not be visible.
- All pants are to be worn at the waist (no "sagging") Tight fitting pants (e.g. tights, spandex, bicycle pants, etc.) are also prohibited. Frays or holes above the knees are prohibited.
- Body piercing jewelry is prohibited except for rings, studs or other traditional jewelry. Any piercing that distracts the teaching and learning environment will be prohibited.
Because fads in dress and grooming are subject to sudden, and sometimes radical change, a basic rule to remember is that student dress and grooming should not be suggestive or indecent, or so bizarre and unusual as to detract from the classroom environment.
All students attending Communications Arts HS are expected to adhere to the standardized attire requirement.

Senior Portraits
Seniors, if you haven't already done so, please call Prestige at (210) 691-1284 or visit our local Prestige website to set up your senior portrait session. Only pictures taken with Prestige will be in the yearbook. Please keep these things in mind:
- Make sure they have you as a Communications Arts student NOT Taft.
- Our yearbook pose is a cap and gown NOT tux and drape. Be sure that the cap and gown you are given is WHITE with a red and white tassel, and for those in NHS, our stole is blue NOT white. The yearbook pose is cap on, and you MUST BE DRESS CODE COMPLIANT. We will NOT be Photoshopping pictures.
- Yearbook ONLY sessions are free, but we encourage you to choose a package with a variety of outfits and poses to reflect your personality and interests.
- Please consider purchasing a portrait package. A percentage of each sale is returned to our yearbook account to cover the cost of printing the portraits in the yearbook.
- Be sure to have your pictures taken by Nov. 15, so you can be included in the yearbook. The sooner the better, so you have time to do retakes if you are unhappy with the first session pictures.
- Prestige will be on campus Sept. 12th for those without transportation to their studio or for any yearbook pose retakes. The date is for yearbook pictures ONLY.
