2017-21 Redefining Learning Program Technology Plan
The Redefining Learning Program plan is based on the foundational belief that all "students [must] be prepared for success in a rapidly changing world." The method by which students learn and instruction is delivered is being redefine by necessity, as a result. The traditional k12 "school" is no longer a passive experience where a student compliance and a one size fits all approach is preparing all of our students for college and career. With the expansion of this plan, all students will be provided with personalized learning opportunities that incorporate the 4 C's (collaboration, creativity, critical thinking and communication) utilizing technology in their educational experience.
1:1 technology: What does that mean for you as parents of TTSD and the students we serve?
With the ever-growing use of technology in our daily lives, both for work and home, we can imagine the many questions that you as a parent have with your child accessing a device at school and bringing it home.
What is the value of having a device in your child’s hand?
With the evolution of technology comes information at students’ fingertips, access to resources that are otherwise unavailable, safe and easy access to collaboration to improve understanding, and a multitude of ways for students to practice and show what they know.
How are teachers being supported in the intentional use of classroom technology?
Our teachers will be supported in designing and delivering instruction in a way that may be different from the way we learned as students. TTSD is committed to supporting teachers in transforming their instructional practices by providing access to an Instructional Technology Coach who is grounded in evidence-based teaching strategies as well as technology use. Through a differentiated and authentic support system, our teachers become more adept to designing and delivering their lessons in a way that is relevant and engaging for your children.
How does a school device look different than a personal device at home?
Use of personal devices often centers around free choice, connection with friends & watching Netflix/YouTube. In contrast, school use of devices is focused on intentional use to create a product, active engagement to challenge learning and accessing content related to curriculum.
If you have questions you may contact your school main office, TTSD Teaching & Learning Department, or TTSD IT Department at 503-431-4000.
2019 Fall Community Update
As you are aware, there is a great deal of construction happening across TTSD, and as the school year approaches, eight different projects are reaching a conclusion. Each school community will be receiving a more specific communication which will include information about ribbon cuttings and other details, but below you will find summaries for each of the projects that are nearing completion across the district :
Three of our elementary schools (Mary Woodward, Durham, and Byrom) have been going through construction this summer in order to relocate the main office toward the front of the school, which will include a new “secure vestibule” at the entry point to the school. These vestibule projects will require visitors to each school to be granted access, or be"buzzed" into the main office, to enter the building. This security enhancement will help our schools control access to our buildings more carefully, and, as you will see in the other construction updates below, are being built into each of the other projects across the district. In the coming weeks we will be providing more detailed information to individual school communities, letting students and families know exactly how these vestibules will function.
At Tigard High School, they are completing "Phase 1" of a two phase project that will be fully finished by the beginning of the 2020-21 school year. Students returning to THS this fall will see that the new building that faces Durham Road is complete, and will house math, CE2, language arts, and health classes. Additionally, this wing will be home to a new centralized Administration Office and secure vestibule. In the SW corner of the building, a new CTE/Arts wing has been constructed, and several programs will have new teaching spaces, including computer graphics, video production, computer science, journalism, drawing, ceramics, and engineering. This addition will also house a new CTE Pathway Program titled Community Design that will occupy the “makerspace” being constructed in this wing.
Further East along Durham Road, we are excited to introduce the Tigard-Tualatin Community to "Creekside Community High School" (CCHS), formerly known as Durham Education Center. From the outside, care was taken to match the scale of existing buildings and compliment the campus plan. The New Classroom Building bends around the existing, historic ‘Old Schoolhouse’ to define a communal courtyard, while a raised deck offers an accessible entry into the schoolhouse. The New Classroom Building will house an administration suite and a variety of classrooms, including a computer lab, science classroom and state-of-the-art makerspace. A large kitchen and vegetable garden are provided to support culinary education and community agriculture programs. The southward-sloping metal roof maximizes the capacity for solar panels, which are anticipated to produce all the electricity needed during the year, making the New Classroom Building the first Net-Zero Energy building in the Tigard-Tualatin School District.
On September 3, Tualatin High School, will open the school year with: an expanded "commons" area with increased seating capacity to alleviate lunchtime congestion; upgrades to the mens and womens locker rooms and a new fitness room; a relocated main office and secure vestibule on the south side of the building; a new "makerspace" connected to the TECH wing; and a Special Education office with new teaching spaces, offices and meeting spaces.
We are thrilled that a new Templeton Elementary will open for the 2019-20 school year! The newly constructed building will include: Classrooms fully wired for technology with flexible “extended learning areas” connecting rooms; Outdoor play areas including a soft surface, hard surface and kindergarten area; and a centralized Administration Office and secure vestibule entrance. Please help us celebrate the grand opening for Templeton on September 3 at 330pm.
While these projects reaching their conclusion, several more projects are just getting underway. Please check the TTSD Bond Website for information related to the renovation of Twality Middle School and the construction of TTSD’s 10th Elementary School, Art Rutkin Elementary, on the west side of Bull Mountain.
