Have a great summer
It has been a pleasure to work with your children. Please encourage your children to keep working hard. I will miss my 8th graders moving on to the high school and wish them the best of luck. I hope everyone has a safe, fun and relaxing summer.
Summer Suggestions for English Learning
With summer here, you may also be looking for ways to continue to engage your students in learning so they can continue to grow with their English proficiency. There is a beautiful solution to those worries: READING!
There is solid research that has revealed the “summer slide” can be prevented with simply reading. Students can improve in all subjects by challenging themselves with reading books that appeal to their interests, try new genres, or read challenging texts with family. I wanted to send you off on your summer break with some ways to engage with learning and help your students continue to grow. There are also some options for reluctant readers! No matter what level your student is at, any reading will benefit them!
Continue reading English regularly. Students should still have access to EPIC on the computer.
Visit Novi Public library and check out English books from there. Or visit this link for different reading and learning opportunities through the Novi public library www.novilibrary.org/
Vocabtest.com offers word of the day and vocabulary activities to improve your word knowledge.
Do you have a reluctant reader?
Start a family book club with family near or far and schedule time to talk about the books
Read a novel that has been made into a movie. Use the movie as a reward for reading. **Note, this link has novels for various age groups, so if you’re also a reluctant reader, there may be some ideas here.
Access audiobooks or podcasts. Great for pairing with a text or simply listening to during long car rides, during chores, or exercise.
- Students should still have access to iReady and can continue English skills on iReady.
- Try to do things in the community such as a sport or activity where you are around other English speaking children.
-Practice on the English learning sites listed below
