The Crissman Connection

Happy New Year!

Hi Crissman Families,

I hope you had a wonderful Holiday break! The students had a productive week while getting back into the routine.

The new year brings so much excitement about setting goals and expectations for ourselves. A great activity at home would be to ask your child what they would like to work on and/or achieve this school it reading a chapter book, mastering multiplication facts (or addition) and developing a plan on how to achieve their goal. Children love discussing what they do well and what they would like to work on. This also allows your child(ren) to reflect on their own learning.

Just a reminder that we have NO SCHOOL on Monday, January 17th due to the MLK Holiday.

Have a great weekend,

Mrs. Papastamatis

Yours Truly,

~Mrs. Papastamatis

UCS Wellness Team

The UCS Wellness team is happy to announce the first episode of our podcast series. The team worked with community members to create a podcast regarding different physical, mental and social health areas for UCS staff, students and families.

These podcasts are available on the UCS Wellness page: UCS Wellness - Utica Community Schools (

In the inaugural episode of the UCS Wellness Podcast, Henry Ford II High School counselor Catherine Livingston speaks with Nancy Buyle, School Safety/Student Assistance Consultant from the Macomb Intermediate School District (MISD), touching on anxiety, depression and suicide. This episode will help parents know what to look for in their children and where to go if they have concerns regarding their children's mental health.

Winter Recess Guidelines

Winter Recess

20°F Recess is held outside

15-19°F Wind conditions will determine

14°F or Below: Inside Recess

If temperatures are between 15° and 19°, the

wind chill factor will be considered.

It is important that children dress appropriately: boots, hats, gloves/mittens and a warm coat. All students are expected to participate in recess. Fresh air and physical play help develop fitness and increase children’s ability to focus during learning times. Generally, if a child is well enough to attend school, they are well enough to go outside for a short break and to get some fresh air.
