Educating the Whole Child at NIS
Just like the weather, things are beginning to turn! We've finally completed grade level MCAS testing, and are engaging in some fantastic experiential learning opportunities now and in the coming weeks. Our student scientists continue their hands-on inquiry in our new Carolina Smithsonian Science program across all grade levels. Third grade enjoyed a trip to Plimoth Patuxet Museums last Friday and fifth grade is excited about their upcoming school trip to Camp Bournedale in Plymouth, MA. Many of our 5th grade English learners were engaged in creating the solar system out of clay as they read, researched and wrote all about this topic. There is so much more happening to foster problem solving, critical thinking, and creativity across the school all while fostering important social competencies such as working cooperatively, responsible decision making, and exhibiting social awareness and self-control.
We are proud of the work we do at school and our partnership with you to support the whole child at NIS! Please don't hesitate to reach out to us or to any of your child's trusted school adults whenever you need to chat or partner on something related to your child's school experience.
We are genuinely grateful for your partnership!

Health Office News
Hello NIS Families,
It is hard to believe that we have 21 days of school left! Where has the time gone?! All of the mandated screenings (vision, hearing, height/weight, BMI, scoliosis) have been completed and referral letters have been sent home. If your student received a referral letter needing further medical care, please let me know the results of that physician visit.
The Town is still hosting COVID vaccine clinics in the NES cafeteria on Saturdays. The next clinic will be on June 25th from 9-2pm. Here is a link to the Town website to sign up. Town Vaccine Clinics Having your student get the COVID vaccine will help him/her to have a milder case if they were to contract COVID and help to stay out of the hospital. The CDC now recommends that 5-11 years get a booster vaccine 5 months after their 2nd shot. So if your student was vaccinated in December with their 2nd shot, they are now eligible for the booster.
The warmer weather is here and our students love to be outside. Please remember to use sunscreen and check for ticks. It is also poison ivy season so to avoid getting a rash from poison ivy make sure to have your student shower/bathe after playing outside.
Stay safe and healthy,
Nancy Small RN

Friend of the Nantucket Public Schools - Presents the First Annual Swing into Summer
We are hoping that you also will follow and share our social media information about Swing Into Summer and just generally help to spread the word. Without the Holiday House Tour running the last few years due to Covid, we are in desperate need of fundraising to be able to support important projects within the school.
Curious about what Friends of Nantucket Public Schools (FONPS) is and does? We help to fund in-person projects, out of school field trips, we bring enrichment performances and presentations to NPS schools, provide scholarships and tuition assistance for students, teachers, and coaches, and so much more!
It is going to be a great way to Swing into Summer!!! We thank you for your support. "

2022-2023 School Year Planning
Many thanks to those of you who wrote to share your thoughts about your students' placement for next school year. The deadline was Friday, April 15th for submitting your letter. Late submissions may be considered, but, as our staff worked hard on this task all week, it's possible that late information will not be able to be included in decision making.
If your children are moving out of the Nantucket Public Schools, please let us know early so that we create classrooms with balanced numbers of students. We also want to support you with getting school records to their next destination.
Thanks again,
Evemarie McNeil
No Student Drop Off on Surfside Road or Behind NES
It is also not okay to drop NIS students off behind NES. This is creating some challenges for their arrival process.
NIS School Improvement Plan
No Birthday Food Treats Please
We would like to encourage you to donate a birthday book to your child's classroom library in honor of their birthday. Other acceptable ideas include bringing in a special pencil or decal for everyone in the class if that's preferred.
Thank you for not sending your child to school with food items for the class to celebrate their birthday.
