Dear Hornet Community:
An incident has occurred this week where harmful language was found in one of our bathrooms. A phrase written on a wall included the n-word and referenced causing physical harm. If you happened to see this writing, then we are sorry. Essex High School should be a welcoming community to everyone, and everybody should be able to use EHS facilities without the threat of harmful language.
Unfortunately, finding language like this in the bathroom is not new. You can recall at the beginning of the year where the n-word was written on a locker. Other incidents have happened in years before. This is unacceptable at Essex High School, and a full investigation is underway.
If you personally experienced this language, please reach out to someone on the leadership team, or a school counselor for support. We can direct you to further support available in the school. If you witnessed someone writing it, please let us know or use the anonymous tip line.
Essex High School stands for respect and inclusion, a place where all are welcome and appreciated. Thank you for doing your part to make Essex High School a welcoming place for everyone!
Sincerely,
Your Leadership Team

Meet our New Coordinator of Equity & Inclusion!
Porchea Tipton was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. After high school, Porchea moved to Boston to study Sociology and criminal justice at the University of Massachusetts Boston.
After discovering a passion for education, she went on to receive her masters in Education at Cambridge College. Before joining the Essex High School community, Porchea spent five years of her educational career teaching children with Autism at Boston Public School District.
Porchea has been fortunate enough to build community at Essex high school through her position as a Behavior Interventionist. This year Porchea participated in the design team for the Bias Response Panel and led the BIPOC Affinity space, and contributed to other equity related projects.
Porchea is dedicated to equity, racial and social justice and looks forward to continuing at Essex High School as the Coordinator of Equity and Inclusion. She begins the new position on July 1st, 2021.
In her spare time, you can find Porchea on a snowboard or going for a nice hike. Porchea also enjoys eating various cuisines, traveling and sitting down with a blanket and a TV show.
Scholars' Bowl Team Qualifies for Playoffs!
This past weekend, the State Champion EHS Scholars' Bowl team competed in preliminary rounds of the National Academic Tournament held online. The team worked hard for a 5-1 record defeating teams from NY, OH and NJ, only losing narrowly to a team from OK. They have qualified for the playoffs to be held on June 12 and 13. The team is made up of Anders Holm-Brown, Eric Lu, Patrick Herrin and Elizabeth Messier.
Senior Scholarship Recognition
As we approach the 2021 EHS graduation, we wanted to reach out about students who received any local and/or college/university scholarships that should be mentioned in this year's graduation program. For local scholarships, please send hkennison@ewsd.org the students' full name and scholarship name. For College or university scholarships, just send the student's full name and College/University name.
For both types of scholarships, Hollee will need proof in the form of a scanned document, picture of the letter, announcement or an email confirmation from the original scholarship committee.
The deadline to get scholarship information in the 2021 graduation program is Friday, June 4th at 12pm. Email Hkennison@ewsd.org.
Student Schedules for the 21-22 school year
Schedules will be available in the evening of June 1st for returning students to review for the 21-22 school year. To access your schedule for next year, log-in to your student portal to Powerschool, then click on the icon along the left side called "Next Year's Schedule". Schedules will not be viewable for incoming 9th graders. Incoming 9th graders will receive a printed schedule during their visit to EHS on either June 2nd or June 9th. Incoming students who do not attend the visit will receive a paper copy of their schedule from their school counselor the day after their school's scheduled visit.
Add/Drop
Students who will be in grades 10-12 in the 21-22 school year who wish to make a schedule change are able to do so starting on June 2nd by emailing their school counselor. The EHS School Counselors are not hosting an in-person add/drop. Please email your school counselor to request the change you would like to make, and give as much detail as possible to help your school counselor work to find a solution, though not every requested schedule change is possible. We will do our best! Incoming 9th graders can request a schedule change after they receive their schedule by speaking with their Middle School Counselor. School counselors are not able to make schedule changes that have the intention of adding a new Early Release, Late Arrival, requests to be in a class with a friend or for any other reasons other than meeting your academic needs. Meeting your academic needs is the only reason a school counselor will make a schedule change.
It is surely exciting to be thinking about 21-22. Be in touch with your school counselor if you identified an error with your schedule, have realized you forgot to sign up for a course or have had a change of heart in your academic/career plans. We are here to work with you and help you reach your goals. Please reach out by email to your school counselor if you have any questions, if you notice an error, or if you would like to request a change. We will stop making schedule changes on the last day of school June 15th.
