SCREENAGERS: NEXT CHAPTER SHOWING NOV. 6
APCSD invites you to attend a special screening of the new film "Screenagers: Next Chapter" on Nov. 6 at 6:00 pm. The film examines the science behind teen’s emotional challenges, the interplay of social media and, most importantly, what can be done in our schools and homes to help them build crucial skills to navigate stress, anxiety, and depression in our digital age.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS HOLD ANNUAL FUN RUNS
Averill Park Elementary Schools held their Fun Run events with students raising money through pledges! The events were a huge success! Thank you to everyone involved.
NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY INDUCTS 62 NEW MEMBERS

SCHOOL BOARD RECOGNITION WEEK
The New York State School Boards Association recognizes the week of October 21-25 as School Board Recognition Week. AMS STUDENTS ATTEND VIRTUAL FIELD TRIP TO RPI'S MAKERSPACE
Sixth grade TEAM (Technology Exploration and Media Literacy) students at Algonquin Middle School had an informative video conference with RPI. Rebecca Ekstrom, Algonquin library media specialist, facilitated this virtual field trip as they virtually visited RPI's Makerspace, the Forge. Read more here.
HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS DEVELOP SOLAR COOKERS
Students in Energy and Power classes at the High School conducted beta testing on the solar cookers which they designed. The group ran tests and then cooked with them. Hot dogs for all!
MS. SCRIBNER TAKES OVER AT MHSL
Miller Hill-Sand Lake Elementary School 'hired' a new Principal for the Day! Second grader Addison Scribner and her assistant, Mr. Sibson, made the rounds as part of her being the Principal for the Day on October 25. Ms. Scribner was the overall winner of the MHSL summer reading challenge. Mr. Sibson had to up his game (and his wardrobe!) as Ms. Scribner did an amazing job as Principal. Great job Addi... err Ms. Scribner!
A DAY IN THE LIFE OF THE HUDSON RIVER
Averill Park CSD students joined thousands of other students from New York Harbor to Troy in the 17th Annual “A Day in the Life of the Hudson River” event. Read more about it here.
ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE CLASS STUDIES APHS WETLANDS
Ms. Hunter's Environmental Science class explored the wetlands of APHS with local expert Christine Relyea. Students observed, collected, and identified several different organisms and plan on doing a comparison study again in the spring It was a lot of fun learning first-hand the functions and importance of this vital ecosystem in our backyard!
LONG-TIME BUS DRIVER RIDES OFF INTO THE SUNSET
Miss Sager and her No. 12 bus have become a holiday staple across the Averill Park Central School District. After 20 years of service, she is retiring at the end of this week! Be sure to wish Mrs. Sager a happy retirement! Enjoy! Read more here.
MYSTERY READER IS SUPERINTENDENT FRANCHINI
Superintendent Dr. Franchini stopped by Miller Hill-Sand Lake Elementary recently to be a mystery reader in Mrs. Pugliese’s first grade class!
HOSTING COMMUNITY CIRCLES
Mr. Banks ran the first Community Circle in Mrs. Deo’s 4th grade classroom this week. Students had a choice of four questions to answer, or be given a Halloween-themed "Would You Rather" scenario from Mr. Banks.
STUDENTS ATTEND HOMECOMING DANCE
Homecoming Dance 2019 saw more than 600 AP students celebrating the culmination of a wonderful week at APHS!
AUTHOR VISITS AMS, PRESENTS TO GRADES 3-7
Author Johnny Marciano visited Algonquin Middle School last week and spoke to students in grades 3-7 and their families. Mr. Marciano wrote the series “Klawde” and “Witches of Benevento”. He delivered a presentation, answered questions and signed copies of his books.
APHS, AMS STUDENTS ATTEND YOUTH SUMMIT IN ALBANY
Students from the middle school and high school had the opportunity to attend the 2nd Annual Youth Summit at the Albany Capital Center! The Summit had close to 700 students from 31 school districts and was hosted by Northeastern Community Action Partnership. This year's theme was taking care of the wellness of students.
COLLECTING FOOD FOR A CAUSE
Students at Algonquin Middle School have been collecting food items for our local Kiwanis to support families in need!
APHS ART STUDENTS VISIT MASS MOCA
The APHS Art Department visited the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCa) this week. Located in North Adams, Massachusetts, MASS MoCa contains music, sculpture, dance, film, painting, photography, theater, and other works of art.
DISTRICT OFFICIALS ATTEND NYSSBA CONVENTION
Averill Park CSD Superintendent Dr. Franchini, along with Board of Education members Peter Schaefer, Jessica Zweig and Meghan McGarry, attended the New York State School Board Association Convention in Rochester this week. The state-wide event brings together more than 2,000 leaders in education to discuss current topics of concern to school board members.
WHIPPLES HONORED AS CASDA FRIENDS OF EDUCATION
Bill Whipple, bus driver at Averill Park Central School District, and Betty Jean Whipple, volunteer, will be honored with the CASDA Friends of Education Award on Wednesday, Nov. 6, at the 4th Annual Friends of Education Dinner being held at the Albany Marriott Hotel. CASDA presents this award to recognize the selfless contributions of individuals who dedicate themselves to serving students and enriching their school communities. Read more here.
MHSL STUDENTS PROMOTE KINDNESS
A group of Miller Hill-Sand Lake Elementary students met with Principal Sibson recently to share their persuasive paragraphs. The group of 3rd and 4th graders felt that the MH Tiger Paws of Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible should include a paw for Be Kind. Read more here.

ANGLER CLUB HOLDS FIRST MEETING
The Angler Club held its first meeting of the year! Representatives from Trout Unlimited and the Bailey Mountain Fish and Game Club were in attendance, teaching fly, spin and bait casting techniques.
FOSTERING A LOVE FOR READING
To encourage a love for reading, students in Mrs. Coyne's 4th grade class at Miller Hill-Sand Lake Elementary have been reading their favorite childhood story to their classmates each day!
CELEBRATING BUS DRIVER APPRECIATION WEEK
West Sand Lake Elementary held a breakfast for Bus Driver Appreciation week!
THIRD GRADE FAMILY MATH FUN NIGHT AT MHSL
Students from MHSL participated in Third Grade Family Math Fun Night. During the event, students and their parents played games and participated in activities to help students master their math facts and improve their work on mathematical concepts. The students were sent home with instructions so they could duplicate the games at home.
LEARNING ABOUT AND CREATING FOSSILS
Third graders at WSL are learning about fossils and how they were created! After their unit of study, students were able to use what they learned to create fossils to share with their families. It was a lot of fun for them and they recalled so much information about fossils that they learned!
MAKING CELL MODELS FOR MEDICAL EXPLORATIONS
Sixth grade students made cell projects for medical explorations! Everyone did a great job creating cell models and explaining the jobs of each organelle.
SECOND GRADERS LEARN ABOUT MEASUREMENT
Mrs. Harrington’s second grade class at Poestenkill Elementary has been learning about measurement. The students practiced their measuring skills with tape measures and meter sticks by measuring items around the classroom, including themselves!
OBP PRESENTS ALMOST, MAINE ON NOVEMBER 1-2
The Off-Broadway Players performances of "Almost, Maine" are this Friday, Nov. 1, and Saturday, Nov. 2, at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $8 for students and seniors and $10 for adults. Tickets are being sold during lunches and at the door. Read more about the show here.
COUNSELING CENTER FINDS WAYS FOR COLLEGE/CAREER READINESS
The Counseling Center is continuing to look at ways to help students become more college and career ready. This year, we are asking all students to input their extracurricular activities in Naviance -- a college and career software program which APHS utilizes to support students in making their college and career choices. For most students, the username is their school email and the password is their school pin times two. Students can log in at https://student.naviance.com/averillphs
ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME ACCEPTING NOMINATIONS FOR 2020 CLASS

GO HOME EARLY DRILL ON NOV. 8
The Averill Park Central School District will hold a “Go Home Early” drill on Friday, Nov. 8, 2019. All schools plan to dismiss 15 minutes earlier than regular dismissal times that day and there will be no late buses for Middle School and High School. Dismissal procedures will take place as they normally would on a regular day of school. For more information, click here.
ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS HOLD FIRE PREVENTION DAYS
Averill Park Elementary Schools held fire prevention days in October. Volunteer firefighters brought their trucks and fire-fighting gear to school for the students to see!
NEW VISIONS INFORMATIONAL SESSION ON DEC. 11
New Visions offers three programs – Medical, Scientific Research and World Health, and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). Each program has its own location off our campus that students earn not only their remaining high school credits for graduation, but many college credits as well. Any junior that may have an interest in one of these career paths, and would like to learn more about the New Visions program, should come to the counseling center and sign up for the information session on Dec. 11 at 1:00 p.m. This meeting will lay out all of the expectations of the program and will have a question and answer period where all of your questions will be answered.
