Reading is paradoxically both a solitary and a very social endeavor. Readers sit alone staring for hours at an object. They could be meditating for all the outward signs of activity. In fact, they're engaged in very lively and intimate exchanges with writers. Even the least worthy title contains ideas, images and characters that make their way from one mind to another through the medium of story. But they aren't just passively copied and pasted, they aren't just ink on paper or pixels on a screen. They are vibrant entities that are sometimes misunderstood, sometimes transformed and sometimes made better by their journey from mind to mind.
When you think of reading in this way, it's hard to believe that libraries and the people who love them are often mistakenly thought to be quiet and sedate. People seem to forget about the boundless energy contained in books and how easily it slips into their users. Once the ideas and images and characters make the leap from page to person, they tend to demand that they be shared - hence book clubs and literature classes and reviews and all the other ways we find to relive, remix and reinvent the words that spring from the pages and change our lives. Spending the last few months promoting The Great American Read has been a great opportunity to add to the already spirited conversations about our favorite, hated, most confusing and most affecting reads. To me, reading, the act that starts all those marvelous actions and reactions, sounds like something that deserves a holiday of its own.
The shortening days bring us a season to contemplate what we are thankful for and what gifts we wish to give to our families, friends and neighbors. We at the Greenwich Free Library are thankful for you. From Building Blocks Story Time to Seniors Lunch and Learn, we dedicate ourselves to finding more and better ways to serve you. We hope you will consider contributing to our 2018 Annual Appeal campaign so we can transform your gifts into literacy, entertainment, imagination, curiosity, community and so much more.
Best wishes for a joyful holiday season full of reading.
