From the Director
Dear CDS Community,
It was a gorgeous day at the Cheongna Lake Park for this year's We Run Cheongna 3K fun run. The air was just cool enough to keep kids moving under the autumn sunshine. We were so happy to see our middle school students bring their full enthusiasm and effort to the event. The theme for the day was Community and Character. A special thanks to Mr. Parmar and our P.E. department for making this day possible.
Our student council also did an excellent job planning and hosting various activities including a relay race, Sharks and Minnows, Mafia, and a bake sale! We're proud of their growing leadership skills and look forward to more successful student council events in the future.
In addition to We Run Cheongna, last week was full of excitement and learning including a special drumming performance from the Seo-gu Pungmul Group--which includes our very own Ms. Vanliew! Grade 5 & 7 had a wonderful time on their field trip to the Seoul Botanical Gardens. You will find more information about these events within this week's MS Newsletter.
Parent Teacher Conferences
Please mark your calendars for our fall Parent Teacher Conferences on October 23rd from 2-8pm. This will be a great opportunity to hear about your child's progress, ask questions, and discuss ways we can work together to support your child's learning goals. Information on how to book your child's teachers will follow shortly. Please note that students will be released from school at noon on this day.
Have a great week!

Upcoming Musical Performance!
In Music class during Term 1, the 5th graders have been learning about SE Asian Shadow Puppets and Music using a Project-Based Learning approach. The students have worked hard to write a story, choose and learn 3 songs from SE Asian countries, and made puppets. The time is coming for them to show off the work they have done this term.
On behalf of the 5th grade classes, we would like to invite you to our SE Asian Shadow Puppet Shows. The performances will be in the Small Theater at the following times:
이에 저희는 여러분을 5학년 학생들의 동남아시아 음악 그림자 인형극 공연에 초대합니다. 공연은 Small Theater에서 아래 시간에 진행될 예정입니다.

-5B: Tuesday, October 15th @ 11:45am (For the Love of Animals...and Each Other)

Grade 5's Creates Comic Books - Paleolithic Age to Neolithic Age
Last week 5th grade students were hard at work on their comic books that showed the transition from the Paleolithic Age to the Neolithic Age. This week, we would like to showcase their finished product that includes beautifully decorated cover pages along with story pages that dealt with the topics of study. We are proud of the effort that the students put forth and amazed at the quality of work presented.

In this semester, the sixth graders read two short novels (나무 그늘을 산 총각, 소나기). They chose the most memorable scene and created a 4 cut cartoon. The students first picked out the most important scene in these two novels, and they created the characters' words, actions, and thoughts into speech balloons and thought balloons. In doing this activity, we were able to go deeper into the novel and imagine freely.

Grade 5 & 7's Field Trip - Seoul Botanic Park
This week 5th and 7th grade students went on a science field trip to Seoul Botanic Park. The brand new state of the art facility showcases a range of different plant species from different ecosystems around the world. The facility contains a massive indoor greenhouse area with multiple climates, an interactive area, and a seed library. Surrounding the biodome lies is a sprawling outdoor garden full of native Korean plant species and exhibits that allow students to interact with local flora and fauna.
Dalton students did an incredible job of documenting what they saw, contemplating the adaptations of plant species, and exploring the vibrant diversity that the plant kingdom has to offer. Many students brought back seeds from the seed library that they will be growing at home or in their science classrooms. We may soon see seedlings emerging from the soil and growing along with these brilliant young students!

After a picnic lunch outdoors we took some time to view the gardens around the park and also let loose on the nearby playgrounds. Plenty of snacks and games helped to re-energize our batteries. Finally we returned to school full with a much deeper knowledge and appreciation for plants.
