SWIFT WEEKLY UPDATE
February 28, 2021
A Message from the Principal
I don't know about you, but the 50+ degree days this week brought hope and smiles as we look forward to the warmer days around the corner. Our students were able to take some much more comfortable outdoor mask breaks than they have lately.
As you know, as we follow "The Road Forward" the district will be switching to a 4-1 Model, with 4 days of in-person instruction, with Mondays remaining virtual, beginning the week of March 22nd.
This week the district worked to obtain accurate survey data on which students want to remain virtual or return to in-person learning as change our model.. By now you should have either filled out the survey in the Parent Portal or received a phone call from one our staff members checking which option you prefer. Just to reiterate what these two choices mean, their details are listed below.
Choice 1: In-person Learning. This will entail in-person instruction within the school building.
· This choice reflects a commitment for your student to attend school in-person, 4 days a week (Tuesday through Friday).
· Students will attend in-person where adherence to 6 feet social distancing, to the greatest extent practicable, will occur.
· In areas where we cannot adhere to 6 feet social distancing, additional PPE will be provided. At the secondary (grades 6-12) level that may include being required to wear a face shield and at the elementary (PK-5) level that may include desk shields/face shields.
· Students MUST be committed to attending school in-person; and will be marked absent when they do not. An in-person student will only be eligible to live stream virtually, when their parent/guardian has communicated to their child's school nurse that they are sick and/or are in quarantine.
·
Choice 2 :Remote Learning. This will entail your child learning from home via Google Classroom. This choice reflects a commitment by your student to engage in virtual instruction.
· Student learning from home via Google Classroom and Google Meet for live teacher instruction. The Virtual learning option is being provided pursuant to Executive Order 175
· Virtual learning students will still have the ability to fully participate in live streamed teacher instruction, which includes: whole group instruction, mini-lessons, collaboration through breakout rooms, small group instruction and the completion of formative assessments and learning activities.
· This choice reflects a commitment to virtual instruction pursuant to Policy 1648.02, which will allow for one additional window to transition to in-person instruction at the conclusion of the 3rd quarter in April.
This week we also had the opportunity to celebrate "Read Across America Week," a nationwide initiative to encourage reading in the classroom. Several classes had virtual guest readers, and so many of our students participated in the themed dress up days and reading centered activities throughout the week. In line with our District Goal of "prioritizing literacy for all," our school continues to emphasize the importance of reading, and we encourage you to do the same at home.
We appreciate your continued partnership with the Swift School as we travel down the road back to "normal" one step at a time.
As always, please contact me with any questions or concerns.
Stay Safe.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT
VIRTUAL and HYBRID SCHOOL HOURS for the week of February 28, 2021
HOURS 9:15 -3:30
SMALL GROUP INSTRUCTION/GUIDED READING 2:40 - 3:30
Establishing routines and schedules for your child will ensure their overall success. We want our teachers and students to follow a schedule that is very close to the schedule they will have when returning to school in person. Therefore, attendance is important and we expect our students to attend their Google Classroom daily. We will pay particular attention to the social and emotional needs of our students, building strong relationships in this new environment and ensuring their comfort as an online learner.

Swift GT Students Fly High Studying Aviation
Mr. and Mrs. Zanes (Bridget's parents) presented to our G/T students
The students learned how airplanes are controlled once they leave the ground. The Zanes are employed at the FAA Technical Center and work on the software that is used by air traffic controllers.
Paper Airplanes are the best!
Paper airplanes were great fun to make, too! They learned how to make three different types of planes and test the distance of each one. Steven enjoyed them so much that he created a video. Here’s the link to view his video...it’s awesome!
Aviation Projects
Students then choose an aviation topic they’d like to further explore and then create a project to demonstrate their learning. The topics included:
● Helicopters
● Hot air balloons
● Parachutes
● Airplanes
● Paper Airplanes● The Military and Aviation
Projects made were slide shows, videos, charts, and an interview with a Air Force veteran. In order to share what they learned, they created a website. Our school’s Kindergarten through 3rd grade teachers will be invited to use the website to teach their students about aviation. Here’s the website. Please check it out!
