A Message from our High School Counselor

World of Work Wednesdays! - We need your help!

November is National Career Awareness Month

World of Work Wednesdays are 1-hour, virtual events where a panel of professionals take questions, interview-style from me, the School Counselor. Questions will be pre-released to those who participate in the panel.

We hope to have 2-3 professionals, within the same field, on each panel and hope to hold multiple events throughout the school year. That way, we can present on various career fields!

If you are interested in participating in a panel, complete this survey, and I will contact you.

If you know someone who would be a great person to share their career with our community, share this survey with them, and I will reach out!

Let's build a partnership for the success of our students!

Kind Regards,

Mrs. Tegan Thacker, M.S., P.P.S.

Orange County History Day - Natural History Day

Each year NHD frames students’ research within a historical theme. The theme is chosen for its broad application to world, national or state history and its relevance to ancient history or to the more recent past. The theme for 2020 is Breaking Barriers in History. The theme provides a focused way to increase students’ historical understanding and an opportunity to develop perspective and understanding rather than merely being able to cite facts and figures. Through participation in this program, students in grades 4-12 become amateur historians on their journey to discover the significance of their chosen historical topic.

To learn more about this unique opportunity, please visit https://ocde.us/EducationalServices/STEMandHumanities/History/Pages/History-Day.aspx

If your child is interested in participating in this year's contest, please contact Chuck Glowacz: chuck@inspireschools.org

The Past & The Curious

Mick Sullivan created The Past and The Curious in 2016 and it is a work of love. Since then, friends have joined the fun and we create it in between family, work, gigs and the many other commitments we’ve all got in our lives. We really think people will find value and joy in what we do, and no one else is doing something quite like it – so we create.

Maybe someday The Past and The Curious will help us earn a living, instead of costing us our discretionary income. But more importantly, maybe you will enjoy it and share that excitement about the past with others.

Here’s our mission statement, if you’re into that kind of stuff:

History is amazing. The stories from our collective past have the power to transform people today.

It is our goal to share true stories of inspiration, humor, and the incredible achievements of all types of people, many of which are sadly under-shared, and to do so in an easily accessible and diverse manner.
Through bite-sized audio-based stories, music, a website, and illustrated children’s books, we aim to spark the curiosity of children, parents, teachers, and anyone else who loves a great story and has an interest, of any size, in the past.

We hope our audience discovers – or rediscovers – that we are all human; and we always have been.

Homeschooling Advice

You can homeschool in less than 2 hours per day

"When someone first envisions homeschooling, the first thought is often a family replicating the school environment at home. Lessons start promptly at 8:30am, with children working studiously around the kitchen table until a break for lunch at noon. After the lunch break, lessons continue until 2:30pm. Then the homeschool day is over. But, for a large and growing number of families, homeschooling looks absolutely nothing like this. For example, homeschooling families who identify as unschoolers make no distinction between living and learning. Children learn from the day they are born. You can’t stop them. Other homeschooling families believe in incorporating some structured academic activities into their days and weeks. Even so, these families tend to have a lot of free time to play, explore, and go on adventures compared to families with children in traditional schools. Homeschoolers are often asked how they have time to do everything. Where does all their time come from? Let’s compare the amount of structured learning taking place during the school year with the time it takes for homeschoolers to accomplish the same thing."
