Oakwood Intermediate PTO
January 2017
Dear Oakwood Parents,
I trust that everyone had a wonderful holiday break and is looking forward to getting back into a routine. Our spring semester will get busy in a hurry and will fly by in the blink of an eye. Many activities are going to happen early and often, and we encourage you to stay informed by reading the team newsletter, checking the website, and calling anytime you have a question.
Next week we will have our Geography and Spelling Bees. Our Geo Bee will begin in the library at 4 PM on Wednesday, January 11. Our Spelling Bee will begin in the library at 3:50 PM on Thursday, January 12. If your child is participating, please come and support them.
Today, you will receive your student’s report card from the 3rd six weeks. With our 5th grade students’ report cards, you will find a registration form and course description guide. Our counselors visited with the 5th grade students yesterday to discuss their elective choices for next year. This is the primary focus of the registration form, so please take the time to discuss with your child their options for next year. Once you discuss the options, please complete the registration form and sign it. Registration forms are due back to your student’s Success Teacher by January 13. You can also visit our counselors’ website.
For our 6th grade students, we have attached a flyer to your child’s report card for the upcoming parent night at AMCMS. On Friday, January 20, the counselors from AMCMS will visit with our entire 6thgrade student body throughout the day to discuss course selection for next year. The parent night is January 23 at AMCMS.
On Monday, January 16, we will not have school as we observe the Martin Luther King Holiday.
5o Men Who Can Cook tickets are on sell now in the front office. This annual event will take place on Friday, February 3, and is sure to be a good time. If you’re interested, be sure to get your tickets now before it is too late.
As always, thank you for allowing us the opportunity to work with your amazing children.
Thanks for our Christmas Fiesta!
The Christmas Fiesta was a success! Thank you to all the parents who participated and helped serve. The staff really appreciated it and our Staff Appreciation team did as well.
Our next staff appreciation event will be Friday, February 3. We will be throwing a "Souper" bowl party. Keep watch for a sign up genius in the middle of January.
Coming up in P.E.
Jump Rope For Heart & Hoops For Heart is a fun event that helps us learn about heart health, the importance of exercising and at the same time raises money for the American Heart Association! On February 3rd our school is going to have the chance to raise money to help fight heart disease and stroke and you’ll also get to exercise your hearts by jumping rope/playing basketball in the dark! That’s right; students will be jumping and playing basketball in the dark as we make our big event Glow in the Dark! When you participate in Jump Rope For Heart & Hoops For Heart you’re a volunteer for the American Heart Association and you set an example for heart health. Envelopes and Parent Letters will be going home today, January 6th. Deadline for returning your envelope is February 10th.
To thank students for helping fight heart disease and stroke, the heart association will send our school great thank-you gifts and PE Equipment for us to keep our hearts healthy. Gifts will be shipped to the school after Oakwood has turn in their total donations raised. Also this year, the American Heart Association has Zoo Crew Animals! The first animal we have is Rory McFiercely III and his lanyard. When students receive their first donation, have your parent tear off the coupon from your collection envelope and bring it back to Coach Burdick in class. She will then give the student their animal. If student’s raise money online they can earn other animals as well. For their first online donation you will receive Mr. Tusker. There are other pups students can earn that will be sent with their other Thank You gifts like the t-shirt and other thank you gifts.
As an extra incentive for our Oakwood students, each team will have their own “Change” Jug. Here student place coins only into the jug to also raise money for the American Heart Association. Based on the team with the most “Change” in their Jug, on
February 3rd, they will earn the right to Slime Coach Burdick, Coach Hargrove, and Coach Meza.
If you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Coach Burdick at eburdick@csisd.org.
