Coloma Junior High

Week of September 12th

We are off to a Great Start!

Thank you for all the ways that you are supporting us in the start of a wonderful school year. Our students are already visiting the Science Labs to participate in hands on activities, practicing writing skills in ELA, collaborating in Math, creating comic strips and videos and more. Have you been amazed at anything your student is already doing?

Our JH Athletics has kicked into high gear this week. Our XC Team took on 2 meets and our athletes saw huge jumps in their Personal Records and even earned medals this week.

The JH Football Team traveled to Buchanan for a scrimmage and are preparing to officially kick off their season with a home opener on Wednesday, Sept. 21st at 5pm vs. Brandywine on our home field.

Our Volleyball Team has been putting in the work to prepare for their Home Opener on Monday, September 19th @ 5pm vs. Bridgman.

Come out and support our Comets!!

After School Study Hall - Will begin on Sept. 13th

The Junior High provides After School Study Hall on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Study hall runs from 3:05 (after dismissal) to 4:05.

Students must have their own transportation home at 4:05. No sign up or fees required. Students can come as often as they need. Students are provided with a quiet space with reliable internet to work on homework with a certified teacher to assist.

Facilities Survey

In an effort to provide the best educational facilities possible for our staff and students, the Coloma Community Schools Board of Education has been engaged in a year-long process to evaluate our facilities, identify areas for improvement, and develop a plan to implement the improvements. They have held 4 community forums over the last 5 months to share their ideas and findings as well as solicit feedback from the community! The Board of Education now asks that you complete this SURVEY before September 26, 2022 to help them make their final decision! Your voice is important to them and valued! Thank you in advance for taking the time to complete the survey!

On behalf of the Board of Education,

Dave Ehlers, Superintendent

NWEA Testing This Week

Our students will be participating in NWEA testing this week in the areas of ELA and Math. NWEA stands for the Northwest Evaluation Association. Our students will be taking the MAP (Measure of Academic Performance) Growth Test. This is a computer adaptive test that adjusts to your child's learning level throughout the test. The assessment will measure what your child knows and how they are growing. We take the tests three times each school year so that we can track their progress across the school year as well as from year to year.

The scores from the test are used to develop individual and classroom level strategies to maximize every child's learning potential.

All students will test for ELA on Tuesday morning. Breakfast will be available before school and then students will report to their first hour class for testing. Students will remain in 1st hour until the majority of testing is complete.

We will repeat the same process for Math on Friday morning. The goal is to complete testing in its entirety for the majority of students to minimize disruptions and multiple testing days.

Picture Day - Sept 15th

Picture Day for the Junior High is scheduled for September 15th. Forms were sent home with your child on Friday, September 9th.

Delayed Start - Wednesday, September 14th

Our first Delayed Start is scheduled for this week.

At the Junior High, our classes will begin at 10:00am.

Buses will run 2 hours later than usual.

Our building will open at 9:30am for students.

As a student at the JH your child has been issued a Chromebook. The Chromebook will be their responsibility to care for and bring charged daily. We have reviewed all of the expectations with students when they received their devices. Students also participate in short daily lessons on how to effectively and efficiently use their devices.

Parents can purchase insurance for accidental damage for $20 for the school year. This is highly encouraged. Insurance does not cover the protective case or charger. Students must maintain their chromebook within the protective case in order for insurance to be valid. A check or cash can be turned into the main office.

Using RTI Time to Build our Positive Climate

This week our students participated in activities to continue to promote positive connections in their classes with peers and with their teachers. The focus this month will be to develop a growth mindset and apply research-based goal-setting strategies to their social and academic lives. Together they will focus on creating classrooms that are connected and encouraging by helping students set and achieve collective and personal goals, learn from challenges, recognize their personal strengths, and explore their unique personalities.

Check to make sure your child is up to date on their immunizations!
