Pinehill School Newsletter
Wednesday 17th August 2022
Message from our Principal
Kia ora tatou, Mālō e lele, Ann yeong haseyo, Ni hao, Dzień dobry
We began our week with a whakatau in the hall to welcome our new teacher in Room 12, Maggie Joyce, as well as 17 new students to Pinehill School and their whanau.
It is important to us that your move to our school is as easy as possible. If there is anything you need to know, please do pop in and ask. No question is ever too small.
On Monday we conducted a lockdown drill at Pinehill School. This provided an opportunity to practise what we would do and how we would act in the case of a real lockdown. As you will be aware from recent media reporting, Lockdowns can occur at any time and it is important we know what to do if we are ever faced with this scenario. The senior leadership team were very impressed with how sensible and responsible the students were throughout the drill. Our lockdown advisor also commented on the responsible and safe actions of our students and staff during this time. You would have received notification of the drill through the school app and email. It is timely to download the school app if you haven’t already for future notifications. In a real lockdown situation you will receive an update every 15 minutes.
Trees for Survival
A huge thank you to all our adult supporters, including the Rotary volunteers, Pinehill staff and Parent helpers as well as all our Year 5/6 students who participated in our annual tree planting last Friday. The teamwork of all involved was phenomenal. The collective effort of all resulted in planting over 3,500 plants, which is a new Pinehill School record. Congratulations everyone!
A massive thank you to Shaun Weston and Marg Milne for all their hours of work nurturing our seedlings throughout the year and to Marg for the planning that goes into our planting day. It is a privilege for our community to be involved in such an amazing cause.
Staff update
Over the past few months, the Pinehill School appointments committee has been working through an appointment process for a new Deputy Principal.
It is with great delight that I can inform the community, Kirstin Blanchard has been appointed. Congratulations Kirstin!

Save the Date - Pinehill School Art Exhibition is coming! Monday 19th September
Every two years we hold an art exhibition to celebrate the talents and efforts of our students and staff in the area of visual arts. Covid has altered our usual timeline for this. However we are delighted to announce that our Pinehill School Art Exhibition will be going ahead this term. Save the date, Monday 19th September 5pm is our Opening Night and an event not to be missed. Our Kapa Haka group will be opening this special event and your children can show you the masterpieces they have been working on all year which will be on display at the exhibition. You will be absolutely wowed with an incredibly colourful display of art, covering a range of media. More information to come. In the meantime, block out your calendars for this exciting event.
Returning to school following illness
The Ministry of Health has confirmed that the guidance for returning to schools following vomiting or diarrhoea has not changed. If a child is free of those symptoms for 48 hours, they can attend school again. Please see the winter wellness guidance for parents, caregivers and whānau to reflect the following points:
If a child has been unwell with a respiratory illness other than COVID-19, they can return to school 24 hours after they have significantly improved and are behaving/eating normally.
Following vomiting or diarrhoea, a child should be symptom free for 48 hours before they can return.
If they still have a runny nose or dry cough without any other symptoms such as a fever, vomiting or diarrhoea, then they are unlikely to be infectious and can be considered well enough to attend school.
