Letter from Ms. Smith
Dear Hawk Family,
Long weekend here we come! I am super excited to have some sunshine coming our way. I hope that you all stay safe and well this weekend.
I do have a couple of important items to share with you:
1) Date change for Ask PTA! to October 26th at 7PM: Click here to join the meeting
This event is all about Literacy. Please join us so you know what is happening here at school and how you can support Literacy at home.
2) Cafe Update- We are short staffed in the Café. We are also experiencing unexpected delays and shortages in food delivery. Until further notice, individual snacks and ice cream will not be sold in the Cafe. Parents/guardians can still order ice cream for Classroom Celebrations. We will let you know when we can resume selling these items. Please know that the Café is working hard to follow the published daily breakfast and lunch menus, but there will be times where substitutions will have to be made.
3) Reminder: No school for students on Monday or Tuesday of next week. Tuesday, Teachers are holding conferences. If you have not signed up for a conference, please contact your Student's Teacher do so as soon as possible.
That is all I have for this week. I am very excited about our October being Literacy Month. I want to give a big SHOUT OUT to PTA for all their hard work supporting Literacy. Please plan on joining as many events as possible because all of these activities support our work with Literacy, even Star Night is connect to Literacy!
Enjoy your weekend!
Stay Strong! Stay Positive! Stay Well!
Sincerely,
AJ Smith

Story Book Character Day
Dear Families,
Hembree Springs Elementary is very excited to announce that on Friday, October 29, 2021, we will be hosting a Story Book Character Day! On this day the staff and students may dress up as their favorite story book character. We are asking that the character come from a book that your child reads and loves (not just from a movie or cartoon.)
Please work with your child to plan a fun and simple homemade costume. We are asking that you work together to be creative with items around the house versus spending money on a store-bought costume. Your child may bring a copy of the book to class that day so that we can take part in several character study activities!
To help ensure students’ feelings of safety and security, violent or frightening costumes are not acceptable. No props, dangerous-looking items, or costume masks covering the face. Please note: face masks will continue to be required per Fulton County Schools’ Covid mitigation policy. See below for examples of acceptable costume choices.
Thank you for making this day possible for your student(s). Please reach out to Carrie McAtee, Curriculum Support Teacher, if you have questions (mcatee@fultonschools.org).

FROM THE PTA
This month’s Ask PTA! will be on October 26th at 7:00pm and will feature our Curriculum Support Teacher, Dr. Carrie McAtee, along with our Literacy Coaches—Jenn Mizzell and Katie Ray.
As our focus this month is literacy, we will share information about how elementary aged students can read to succeed! We will learn what our coaches do for our school community, along with some best practices for parents to use at home. Questions can be as simple as, “My child is struggling to read- how can I help him?”, “Where should my child be developmentally with their reading?” or “What are some books my child would love?”
Change Submission Date
The Reflections Deadline has changed! Please make sure to turn in your submissions by October 22nd! We want to see how your student will change the world!

Book Club
October is Literacy Month at Hembree Springs! One of the many activities that we have planned are book clubs for grades 3-5. As of now, your students (grades 3-5) should have received their book for the PTA-sponsored book club. If they have not yet received their book, please email volunteer@hembreespringspta.org and let us know. We do have extra books at this time. Parents are encouraged to join The Hawk's Nest on Facebook for tips and questions to encourage your reader along the way.
