Curriculum Information and Important Reminders
For the Week of January 11th-January 15th we will be studying:
Math- Fractions (whole, halves, fourths, eighths), Representing them using words and pictures only
Reading- Making connections and identifying the author's purpose, Tomie dePaola author study
OLC: Spelling, Phonics, Handwriting- Spelling List 8, contractions
Writing- Time order transition words, persuasive letter writing
Science- Physical properties and sources of freshwater and saltwater
Social Studies- WASPs and Navajo Code Talkers, historical figures who exemplified good citizenship

Look for all Homework to Come Home Every Monday!
Spelling List-study the words
Math Word Problems- cut and glue problems into the math homework spiral and solve one each night
Guided Reading Response Journal and Book- Choose 2-3 responses each week to write in the journal.
***Please return the Math Homework spiral on Friday of each week. The guided reading folder and response journal should come to school every day.
Study the Spelling List
You can use the Spelling Activities sent home in the parent email the first week to study these words if you choose to. Please remember that it is important for the students to be able to apply the use of these words in their writing as well.

Keyboarding Practice at Home
This is a great resource for them to use to help them become more proficient with their keyboarding skills.
Order Your Yearbooks Now!
The next few weeks are a wonderful time to purchase your 2015-2016 Nichols yearbook if you have not done so already. Deadline to guarantee a Nichols yearbook is Friday, January 22nd . After January 22nd there will be limited quantities available. The price of the yearbook is $25.00. There WILL NOT be a wait list for yearbooks this year, so be sure to purchase one now if you are interested.
Below you will find the link to order a yearbook for your child. You will not need to input a customer number. Select the state, city and the school name to begin ordering. After purchasing you will receive an email notification confirming your purchase. Please save this for your records. Yearbooks will not be distributed until the end of the school year. Thank you for ordering a Nichols yearbook!
-Temperature of 40 degrees or higher: Normal outdoor recess
-Temperatures 33-39 degrees: Reduced to 15 minute outdoor recess
-Wind chill temperature between 33-35 degrees: Reduced to 15 minute outdoor recess
-Temperature/wind chill 32 degrees or below: No outdoor recess
Please make sure that all jackets, hats, gloves, etc. are labeled with your child's name. It makes it much easier to locate the right owner if they are left behind. :)
Important Dates and Upcoming Events
Starting the Week of September 28th we will begin having our PLC time every other Thursday morning from 8:00-8:50. This will be a more consistent schedule for everyone, and the kids will be working with the specials teachers during that time.

January 18th- No School
January 21st- Report Cards go home
January 22nd- 2nd Nine Weeks Celebration

Here are the definitions of words that we have been covering in science.
rock: a piece of Earth’s surface
physical properties: something about an object that can be seen, heard, tasted, smelled or felt
texture: how rough or smooth something is
soil: dirt that helps plants grow
freshwater: water that contains minimal amounts of salt
saltwater: water than contains large amounts of salt
stream: a small body of water that flows into a larger body of water
river: a body of freshwater that flows continuously towards the ocean
lake: fresh water surrounded by land
ocean/sea: most of the water on Earth; saltwater
Multi-Step Problem Solving Tips:
-Make sure to read through the problem and check for understanding (what questions do you have, what does it tell you, what strategies could you use, etc.)
-Highlight, underline, or circle important information
-Select a strategy that is appropriate (refer back to parent handout sent before Thanksgiving break)
-Solve each step of the problem
-Find a way to check and justify your answer (Ask if it is a reasonable answer)
-Label your answer (turn the question into a statement)
