2020 Reflections
"Stay focused and don't procrastinate. It pays off to do a lot of work" -Student
"People have more in common than differences. " - Faculty member
"You do not fully realize what you have until its gone, don't take things for granted. Enjoy what you have while you have it because you never know if it could disappear. Have fun and do the things you can before you can't." - Student
"I have learned that I don't have to act different to fit in, if I have to act different for someone to like me, then they are not real because they should like me for me. I have also learned that you cant change someone unless they want to change themselves, even then you cannot change them. You may be able to help, but they have to do it themselves." -Student
"In a year like 2020, it is extremely easy to drift apart from the ones you love, but they are so much more important than we realize. My friends and family showed me what its like to be there for each other without having to be there, that being alone didn't have to be lonely, and that change is inevitable." -Student
"It’s vital to slow down and spend valuable time with your family. It’s also uplifting to take time to enjoy things we are usually too busy to do like go fishing or plant a garden. " -Faculty member
"Grind even when the circumstances don’t support it." -Student
"Anything can happen, so it is important to have consistency in values and a positive perspective because you never know what life will throw at you. " - Student
"The main thing that I learned is the importance of intentionality with my "people." I got to spend more time with my family during this year because of the circumstances and I feel that even through our transition back to "normal" I have done a much better job of making time for others a priority. It has strengthened my relationships with my family and friends and I am so thankful for it. " -Faculty member
"Go out there out of your comfort zone just like everybody else. Change may hurt but that’s how life goes and you need to be ready because everything can change in an instance." Student

Texas Girls and Boys State
If you are a Junior and interested in attending Texas Boys State or Bluebonnet Girls State in the summer of 2021, please come by Mrs. Harrison's room (418) for an application and more information. The following is a little bit more about the two programs.
What is Texas Boys State?
American Legion Boys State is among the most respected and selective educational programs of government instruction for high school students. It is a participatory program where each student becomes a part of the operation of his local, county, and state government.
At American Legion Boys State, participants are exposed to the rights and privileges, the duties and the responsibilities, of a franchised citizen. The training is objective and practical, with city, county, and state governments operated by the students elected to the various offices.
What is Girls State?
Texas Bluebonnet Girls State is a mythical 51st state where, for one week, participants, or “citizens”, organize their own city, county, and state governments. They elect their own officials, learn the duties of the various city, county and state offices. Citizens introduce and debate their own bills in a mock legislature. The program concludes with a visit to the State Capitol building in Austin where the citizens are given an opportunity to sight-see and meet state officials.
Who participates in Bluebonnet Girls State?
Girls State citizens are made up of excellent high school students from across the state. Girls are selected to participate based on nominations by their own high school faculty or staff. Eligibility is limited to any girl in her junior – or third – year of any Texas senior high school whether public, private or parochial. Fundamental qualifications of all nominees are demonstrated accomplishments of leadership, citizenship and character in their schools and community. Past Girls State citizens include former Governor Ann Richards, former Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn, and Judge Court of Criminal Appeals Bea Ann Smith.
Junior Scholarship Opportunity
The Coolidge Scholarship is a full-ride scholarship opportunity for high school juniors who plan to enroll in college in the fall of 2022. Coolidge Scholars are selected based primarily on academic excellence, an interest in public policy, an appreciation of the values of President Coolidge championed, as well as humility and service.
The 100 top applicants are invited to participate in an all-expenses-paid Summit Weekend in Washington, D.C. and one-time $1,000 scholarship. The application requires that applicants read President Coolidge’s Autobiography and complete a few other reading assignments, so applicants are encouraged to begin the process early.
More information, including the application, is available at coolidgescholars.org. All applications must be completed online and submitted by 5:00 PM Eastern Standard Time, Wednesday, January 20, 2021.

Have you caught someone being a Bulldog?
Have you caught a student or a WHS staff member "Being a Bulldog"? We want to hear about it!
What is being a Bulldog? The American Kennel Club describes a Bulldog as kind but courageous, full of tenacity, friendly, and loyal companions. It is fitting that we are the Wylie Bulldogs because those are the qualities we strive for our campus to exude.
We believe that it is important to recognize those that are examples of kindness, friendliness, loyalty, and courage. Students and staff members can be nominated by students, staff, and community members. It is the hope of WHS that Bulldogs will inspire other Bulldogs to continue to show these characteristics. Nominate someone here!
