THE SKY NEEDS STARS
NUDGE: ROBERTS MIDDLE SCHOOL VOLUME 34
Everyone loves a good finish. The final mile is always interesting when you can sense and see that you are closer to the end. Recently both of my twins ran the 2400 in their district meet. They finished 2nd and 3rd in that particular race. They were beaten by a kid who literally pushed another gear of octane. Even I was impressed of the energy that I witnessed. What separated my twins from this freak of nature was that he knew how he wanted to finish and leaned into his strength.
The last mile in the school world is in the months of April and May. In these particular months, the kids might test our patience. Our endurance is not where it was when we started. Plus, we are still in the messy middle of STAAR prep. The calendar is stacked with concerts, awards, incentives, field trips, and parent events. At Roberts, we frown on using the word busy, but we are definitely productive.
How can we have a strong finish? My challenge to you is, “how do you leverage systematically and intelligently to create the outcome you want?” It comes down to, “how do you want to finish”? Great teachers get uncomfortable when everyone is comfortable. You have to systematically plan out each day. Students are drawn to high structure and clear expectations. To finish strong, you have to lean into your strength. This school's strengths are checking for understanding, using real time data to pull small groups, and creating challenging lessons that provoke curiosity. Which one of these are your strength? Which one of these teaching strategies can push your students to the other side of progress? Bottom line, you have to make every minute of class time have purpose and meaning.
My challenge to help you grow is to find your strengths. Can you channel your strengths to benefit your students? The only way to step into our strength is to challenge your assumptions and highlight blind spots in your thinking. In our last mile, by our preparation, we can expose the blind spots in our lens. Let us finish strong, by intelligently channeling our strengths.
Thank you for all that you do,
Jorly
