NCCA Middle Cyber Connection
Issue 3, May 2021
Greetings and Happy Monday NCCA Families!
Can you believe it? We are closing in on the finish line for the 2020-2021 school year! I encourage you to stay fearless; it is not too late to have a strong finish! The last day to complete Edgenuity coursework is Friday, June 4th. Be sure that you are continuing to:
- Actively work in Edgenuity coursework 6 hours per day minimum
- Consistently reviewing your course reports supporting keeping up with your deadlines
- Joining Live Lessons for the additional support and EOG review
- Accessing Concept Coaches within the LMS for additional "on the spot" support both during and outside of school hours.
Kudos to our student leaders highlighted in this newsletter edition for their academic and character performance. Our middle school Cyber Owls are achieving amazing academic success and continue to make me proud!
Best,
Principal Fleming
End of Grade Testing
The EOG testing window begins on Monday, May 24th. Your teachers are excited about the opportunity for you to test and show your mastery of all things learned this school year. I know I will not be able to see each of you but I am looking forward to seeing as many students as I can by visiting different testing sites across the state.
ELA, Math, and Science EOG review sessions are occurring weekly during small and whole group live lessons. I encourage you to attend these sessions to receive important reviews on content that will be covered during testing.
Please make sure that students are well rested for several nights prior to testing. We want them to shine and show all they know! This year the EOG's will be administered in person at your assigned testing sites online on a computer. Also, please note that all students and our faculty will be required to wear masks during testing.
Feel free to take the Practice EOG Online Test to support being prepared and ready to go the day of testing!

One School One Book - Another Success!
Our One School One Book Fall event was such a success that we had another this Spring! Mrs. Feimster facilitated our Spring Book Read which was titled, Blue by Joyce Hostetter.
Book Overview
Blue accepts the role of “man of the house” when her father leaves to fight Hitler because she wants to do her part for the war in this Parents' Choice Silver Honor Book. She's doing well with the extra responsibilities when a frightening polio epidemic strikes, crippling many local children.
Students had the opportunity to meet and discuss polio with someone that experienced it as a young child, Ms. Paula Warlick. The group ended the book club with a visit from the author herself, Joyce Hostetter. The final meeting was extremely engaging and fun. Ms. Hostestter shared visuals and pictures and answered lots of questions!
8th Grade Promotion Ceremony
The end of the school year is fast approaching and middle school is almost over! Another milestone to check off and another new adventure awaits. Your NCCA Middle School family wants to help celebrate our 8th graders with a promotion ceremony. The ceremony will be held on Thursday, May 20th at 6 pm. The ceremony will be held virtually.
All 8th-grade students are invited to attend the promotion ceremony. However, this does not mean that all students will be promoted to high school. Final grades will be done in June. If you have any questions about your student's possible retention or promotion please reach out to their counselors or teachers.
Yes! Face to Face Events are coming back!
While we know that our NCCA teachers are leaps and bounds ahead of other schools with managing and establishing great virtual learning communities, we also know it’s so important to come together and learn together when possible!
The safety and health of our learning community have been a priority this year. As we look toward next school year we are looking forward to safely offering in-person learning and social activities for students and families next year. Plans include face-to-face STEM activities and more! It’s a year away but we are already starting to plan year-end picnics in 2022 to celebrate another awesome school year at NCCA!
We look forward to seeing our Cyber Owl families more often at various Face to Face events and activities this upcoming school year.
NJHS Outstanding Achievement Award
Our very own 8th-grade student leader, Erica Smith is a recipient of this year’s National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) Outstanding Achievement Award (OAA). The award recognizes 500 exceptional NJHS students with $500, to be placed in a college savings account program managed by Oppenheimer Funds. Congratulations to Erica, her parents, and her team of teachers, counselors!
STUDENT SPOTLIGHT
Each quarter NCCA teachers nominate one student per grade level to receive the Spotlight on Student recognition in the quarterly Middle School Cyber Connection Newsletter. Students are nominated for a varied number of reasons of which may include:
- Exemplary character when interacting in virtual small groups
- Showing student leadership
- Leading and participating in the community through volunteering, participating in clubs, --churches, or other organizations.
- Excelling in showing kindness and compassion
Jordan Ward, 6th Grade
- My favorite subjects are Science and Math because there is always a solution, or there is always a way to check your work even though there is only one answer.
- My favorite things to read are usually comic books, but I also like to read stories that have a plot twist.
- After high school, I plan to travel around the world, and hopefully become a veterinarian or get another really good job.
- I love watching TV, gymnastics, cooking, baking, and playing games with my family.
Takirra Koonce Parrish, 7th Grade
- I don't have a favorite subject
- My favorite thing to read are comic books
- My favorite television show is "The Masked Singer"
- I am eager to get to High School
Shanza Kukda, 8th Grade
- My favorite subject in school is definitely ELA. I enjoy reading all of the diverse articles and stories. Even the difficult poems are incredibly interesting once you understand them.
- I enjoy suspenseful sci-fi novels most. Futuristic technology has always interested me. Add the plot twists, and you have my ideal novel!
- Outside of school, I like to draw and play badminton (for hours) with my sister.
- After high school, I wish to earn a degree in psychology or computer science, the two subjects that I am most passionate about.
2021-2022 School Year Calendar
This calendar has an earlier start date, with, more breaks built-in through the year, and also an earlier end to the year next May. Thank you to all of the parents who provided feedback on the draft; it was shared with Mr. Hill and the Board. Our students will continue to have great flexibility and will be able to work ahead and maintain 24/7 access to their courses.
