CHS Viking News
January 10, 2019
Viking Family,
We are back in the swing of things after Winter Break and are right in the middle of Fight for the Fish Week! We are very excited to host the game in our brand new Viking Court! Speaking of the new Viking Court, we are working on a project to get some wall murals painted in that new gymnasium. There is a lot of white wall space, and we have worked with a local artist and Viking alumni to design some great artwork that will really make that gymnasium look amazing. However, a wall mural is expensive and we are looking for donations to help us make this project a reality. If you or someone you know would like to donate, please let me know!
The semester is winding down and we have finals on the 23rd and 24th of this month. The new semester begins on January 28th. The PSAT scores from earlier this Fall have come in and we are getting individual results and presentations out to our students over the next two weeks and have a Parent night scheduled for the end of the month. There are more specifics in the newsletter but we are encouraged by the results and proud of our students and teachers!
We hope to see everyone out on Friday for the Fight for the Fish!!
Once a Viking, Always a Viking!

National Honor Society News
December 20th was the big delivery day from Santa's Village South (CHS). After multiple kids took multiple trips to the parking lot with multiple 3 tier and flatbed carts, the caravan of 8 cars, SUV's, and one welcome pick-up truck took off.
One hour and 30 minutes after we started delivery, the process was complete. Those vehicles, packed to the gunnels, were unloaded, and the 18th year of Coeur d’Alene High School’s Adopt-A-Family concluded. I continue to be humbled by the contributions from so many parents, students, and staff alike.
I was privileged to be on hand when one of our Viking families picked up their presents. Mom wept with appreciation to see the gifts of love we sent, wrapping me in a lingering hug that spoke volumes.
On behalf of NHS, thank you once again for all that you do to make CHS such a wonderful place.
Sincerely,
Jill Carlson (NHS Advisor)
CHS Showing Growth on PSAT Scores
Our 9th, 10th and 11th grade students took the PSAT earlier this year and we wanted to share our school results with you, as well as our plans for communicating individual results with students and parents. The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test is a standardized test administered by the College Board and cosponsored by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. The district PSAT-NMSQT scorecard (Sophomore and Junior students) and PSAT 8/9 Scorecard (Freshman students) are attached to this newsletter.
At CHS we are always looking for areas where we can continue to improve our practice, but we also want to take some time to celebrate areas where we are seeing success and improvement. We are proud of the work our teachers and students are doing to ensure that all students at CHS learn at high levels.
We saw some encouraging trends from the PSAT-NMSQT tests taken this fall. I want to highlight some areas of celebration for CHS:
- The percentage of our Sophomore students meeting the Reading and Writing benchmark went up 6 percentage points from 69% to 75%.
- The percentage of our Sophomore students meeting the Math benchmark went up 12 percentage points from 44% to 56%.
- The percentage of our Sophomore students meeting both benchmarks went up 11 percentage points from 42% to 53%.
- The percentage of our Junior students meeting the Math benchmark went up 3 percentage points from 41% to 44%.
- The percentage of our Junior students meeting both benchmarks went up 2 percentage points from 41% to 43%.
9th and 10th Graders:
Next week, all 9th and 10th grade students in English 9 or 10 will be handed back their test booklet and score report and receive a presentation given by Counseling Staff on how to read and understand their scores as well as their next steps– such as course planning; additional preparation opportunities and resources. Students who are interested will have the opportunity to request a one-on-one meeting to go over their scores if they have any additional questions etc.
11th Graders:
The junior level counselor and the College and Career Advisor will be handing back PSAT booklets and score reports during our classroom visits which are taking place this week. The counselors will be reviewing their scores reports with them, as well as helping them connect to SAT preparation options – such as Khan Academy. Additionally, during this visit students will continue to identify secondary and post-secondary options that will help them reach their individual goals. Using their test scores and goals students will be updating their 4-year plans.
We have identified students who are currently not enrolled in an ENGL 9, 10 or 11 here at CHS and these students will be called down in small groups – by grade level – to receive their booklets and score reports. They will receive the same information as their classmates.
Additionally, we have a Parent Review Night scheduled for January 30th at 6pm at Coeur d'Alene High School.
If you would like to review the results in more detail, please visit the district assessments page at https://www.cdaschools.org/site/Default.aspx?PageID=2058.

A Note From Our Counselors
The counselors are currently meeting with students to ensure they have a full schedule for 2nd semester. Students who wish to make changes to their schedule will need to follow the proper process:
- Full-year classes: Speak with your current teacher now to initiate the change request process.
- Semester classes: Communicate your desired change with your counselor.
Counselors will be available after final exams on January 23rd and 24th, then again from 2:30 to 3:30 on January 30th and 31st to discuss schedule changes.
Reminder: Counselors are not authorized to make lunch or teacher changes.

Letters of Recommendation
Students can now create and save their Personal College Profile or “Brag Sheet” for letters of recommendation electronically through their Career Cruising Account. The electronic version of a student’s brag sheet is saved automatically and can be printed or emailed to recommenders. This form will help your teacher, coach or community member write a letter that best reflects you.
To access the Personal College Profile (Brag Sheet):
- Log into Career Cruising
- Click on menu arrow – located to the right of the student name
- Select “My Education”
- Click “Update Profile” in the “Personal College Profile” Box.
Direct Admissions Letters and Apply Now Idaho
High school seniors will receive a letter from the Idaho State Board of Education this fall. This letter notifies students of which Idaho colleges and universities they meet admissions requirements for based on their GPA and test scores.
This letter is the first step towards acceptance. While the letter ensures a spot will be held for students for the Fall 2019 semester, students must complete the appropriate school application by February 15th. This process has been made easier with the roll-out of the Apply Now – Idaho website!
Idaho students can apply to 10 Idaho colleges and universities on one application. There are no applications fees when using Apply Idaho Now. The site opened October 1st.
College Representative Visits
Our college admission representatives have begun visiting Coeur d’Alene High School. You can see an updated calendar on the College and Career Website. (Go to the Coeur d’Alene High School homepage – select “Departments” – “College and Career Center” – College and Career Center Calendar”)
This list will be updated regularly, check in often to see new schools as they are added. Students may sign up online or stop by the College and Career Center to sign up.
