Cedar Grove Friday Flash
December 18, 2020
Dear Cedar Grove Families,
We are very excited to share that we will be having a virtual Winter Sing-Along on Wednesday, December 23rd, led by Mrs. Cheryl Smoker-Arellano, our wonderful general music teacher! The theme of this year's Sing-Along is "Winter Lights" - songs of snow, peace, and light. There will be two sessions; kindergarten, first, and second grades will meet together at 9:00-9:35 a.m., and students in third, fourth, and fifth grades will meet at 9:45-10:20 a.m. Students can access the Zoom Sing-Along within the Music Homepage on Canvas. A picture of the Winter Sing-Along Zoom button is pictured to the right. Parents are welcome to join their child during the program; however, please make sure your child is the only one in the family logging into the event on his or her Chromebook, as we are restricted to the number of participants allowed in a Zoom session. We look forward to an enjoyable time of music with our Cedar Grove community!
As a reminder, winter break begins on December 24 and students return to virtual learning on January 4, 2021. Due to the short week next week, the next Friday Flash will be sent on January 8, 2021.
We wish you a safe and happy holiday season and we look forward to seeing you and your children in the new year.
Mr. Derby and Mrs. German

Gr 5 Book Club - New Update
Attention all fifth graders! We are now ready to get the grade 5 book club in gear! Please complete the permission form so that your student has access to all the resources for the book club! We will begin the week of January 25. As of today, it looks like we will be meeting after school from 3:30 to 4:30, but that time may change based on the majority responses. Please have the permission form submitted by Friday, January 8 so that Mrs. Hirschhorn knows how many copies of our first book to get from the public library!
Cedar Grove Boxed/Canned Food Drive - Extended to December 23rd!
Our Cedar Grove Give What You Can food drive to benefit Damascus HELP has been extended and will now end on Wednesday, December 23rd. Thanks to your generous donations, we have collected many items so far, and we hope to collect enough for another truck load! If would still like to make a donation, just drop off canned/boxed food/item donations at the school in the boxes labeled with this sign outside the main entrance door. Thank you for giving to those in need and spreading caring and kindness in our community.
Holds to Go at Cedar Grove ES - New process, same wonderful service!
To continue improving our safety procedures, the media center now has a “curbside” distribution system. There are some Holds to Go procedures that will stay the same:
- Your child will still put books on hold through Destiny.
- You and your child will receive an email notification that your holds are ready for pickup on the next Wednesday between 1 and 4 PM.
- A books "checked out" notification will be printed and added to the holds for your reference.
The changes for Wednesday pickup days are as follows:
- A table will be placed curbside in the bus lane in front of the school at the main entrance. (On inclement weather days, it will be placed under the overhang.)
- Please have your child’s name clearly printed, in very large print to show to the staff member.
- The staff member will place the books on the table for you or your student to pick up.
- Please place your library returns in the box marked "returns" on the table.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may present however, we believe that together, we can maintain a safe environment for everyone while continuing providing this service to our students. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact Mrs. Hirschhorn.
Tech Tips and Reminders
From Mrs. Hirschhorn, Media Specialist
Can you believe it's December? And we have so many wonderful things planned for our December Month of Giving! Please bookmark the December Media Monthly which, as always, is loaded with information for our community, including the December Media Events calendar, our December Reading Challenge, our Tech Tips Slides (ahora disponible en español!)and so much more. Although the Media Monthly is shared to anyone with a link, many of the resources are bound to the mcpsmd.net access. This is for proprietary reasons because often I share a lot of copyright materials and resources that are limited to educational platforms such as mcpsmd.net. Have a great weekend!
Sneak Peek into the January Media Monthly!
Because we will be in the first week of January when we return, Mrs. Hirschhorn would like to share the January Media Monthly a bit earlier than usual! There will be weekly updates to the Media Monthly, so be sure to visit often!
Art, Music, and PE Newsletter
Parents, each month our Arts team will share a newsletter that will provide you with what grade level students are doing in their classes.
Here is the December Newsletter from Mrs. Arellano, Mr. Jansson, Mr. Kieft, and Mrs. Kim! The link may also be found on our school website.
