Veteran's Day

Next Saturday, November 11th is Veterans Day. Our school will be learning about the importance of this day. As a school, we would like to honor veterans from our Heavilin Families by having all students wear red, white, and blue on Monday, November 13th.

If you have a veteran in your family please feel free to fill out the information on the form being sent home with students today. Also, if you have a picture of your veteran please attach it to the form. Please return this form by Wednesday, November 8th. We will be

displaying the information and pictures for all to see in our hallways

at Heavilin. All forms and pictures will be returned to you at the end of the month.

Tuscany Sidewalk

The sidewalk between Tuscany and Heavilin is in progress. Through the 2017-18 school year, we will continue to have bus service to Tuscany neighborhood, even when the sidewalk is complete. We will notify parents when the sidewalk is complete. When we have walking as a dismissal option, a staff member will escort walkers across the school driveway to the property line of Heavilin. Parents of walker students, please review walking safety and the route you choose for your child to take home as they walk through the neighborhood. Kindergarten students must have a sibling or a parent meet them to walk home; we do not release kindergarteners to walk alone. Please note that in 2018-19, there will no longer be bus service through Tuscany.

Note from the Nurse

Often times at school, students need a change of clothes. We keep extra clothes for these situations in our clinic, however, our supply is getting low. If you have gently used sweatpants that you would like to donate, please send them in to the school office. If your child has come home in clothes from the nurse, please launder them and send them back in to school.

Struggles in Math

It is our first year of EnVision Math in Valparaiso Community Schools. Families who were around when we implemented Bridges Math, or even Benchmark Reading, may remember the struggles shifting to a new curriculum approach can present for students. We are very pleased with the higher level and deeper exploration our new math series provides for students. For parents, here is a link to an article regarding productive struggles with math:

Major Saver For Valpo Schools Foundation

On November 8, Valpo Schools Foundation (VSF) will launch their annual Major Saver discount card fundraiser across the Valpo Schools (see the card images below). If your family is interested in participating, collection dates will run from November 14-20. A Major Saver representative will come to the classroom each morning for collections and prize distribution. VSF supports all of the Valparaiso Community Schools. This past school year, VSF awarded grants to Heavilin to support our Connected Paint event, along with three additional classroom grants. Heavilin has a parent representative, Lindsay Knauff, and a teacher representative, Mrs. Stamos, who serve on the VSF board. Thank you to the VSF for supporting Heavilin!
