UNITED STATES SENATE YOUTH PROGRAM

This message is about the United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP). From across the country, 104 students will be selected for a week-long government and leadership education program and will each receive a $10,000 undergraduate college scholarship. Attached are the United States Senate Youth Program application and brochure. Each high school principal may choose two students to submit the USSYP application. The APPLICATION and all required attachments must be emailed no later than Oct. 7, 2022, to mark.gageby@state.sd.us.

The 61st annual United States Senate Youth Program Washington Week is being planned for March 4-11, 2023, in Washington, D.C. The program may be held online pending public health guidance, and status of large group access to the government venues traditionally visited. If held in person, all delegates will be required to be fully vaccinated and boosted to attend. A final decision regarding the in-person program will be determined in fall 2022, with adequate time for students to complete the full vaccination series to receive the scholarship. Regardless of platform, all student delegates will partake in a comprehensive interactive leadership program in the stated time frame, and each will receive the $10,000 college scholarship in the name of the United States Senate.

Please refer to the attached United States Senate Youth Program brochure for complete details. This brochure provides valuable information regarding the USSYP program rules and regulations.

Each high school principal may choose two students to submit the USSYP application on the form supplied by the South Dakota Department of Education (DOE). Each application must have the school principal’s signature, parent/guardian signature, and student signature. The application and all required attachments must be emailed no later than Oct. 7, 2022, to mark.gageby@state.sd.us. Mailed-in applications will not be accepted.

Required: Students must email with their application two (2) letters of recommendation. One letter should be an academic letter from a teacher, counselor, or principal. The other letter should be from a mentor, employer, or adult advisor.

Required: Each student must email with their application a copy of their high school transcript.

If available, the student should attach a copy of their ACT score.

The South Dakota Department of Education will select two delegates to represent South Dakota in the program. Selections will be based on the information the student provides with their application. Each state agency must submit the names of their two delegates to the USSYP on or before Dec. 1, 2022. A representative of the William Randolph Hearst Foundation will confirm each student’s appointment as a delegate with their respective high school principal. The William Randolph Hearst Foundation will notify delegates of their appointment.

More information is available on the South Dakota Department of Education’s USSYP webpage.

The USSYP website can be found at https://ussenateyouth.org/

There will be no USSYP Public Affairs & History exam this year.

PRE-ACT

Juniors please sign up to take the Pre-SAT in the student services office. This test is a great practice for the SAT. The test is also the National Merit Qualifying Test. The test will be on Wednesday, October 12th from 8:00 AM to noon at SBHS. If you have any questions see Mrs. Avery

2023 LEGISLATIVE PAGE PROGRAM

Each legislative session, high school students from across South Dakota have an opportunity for a firsthand look at the legislative process by serving as pages for the South Dakota Legislature. Pages are appointed to serve in the House of Representatives or the Senate for seven to 10 days during one of the five term periods.

The page program is a competitive program, so early application is encouraged. The preferred deadline is October 7, 2022 and the final deadline is October 21, 2022.

Application is made through a sponsoring legislator or legislator-elect. Talk to a legislator or legislator-elect and ask for the privilege of them sponsoring you. Not sure who to approach as a sponsor? Any current legislator or legislator-elect can sponsor a page. Click on Find My Legislators to find the legislators in your district; however, a sponsoring legislator may be from any South Dakota district. Find My Legislators

The President Pro Tempore of the Senate selects the pages who will serve in the Senate. The Speaker of the House of Representatives selects the pages who will serve in the House. In early December, you will be notified by the Page Advisor regarding the disposition of your application.

Contact the Legislative Research Council at any time we may be of assistance at 605-773-3251 or email. Or, contact the Legislative Page Advisor at 605-773-5257.
