News for the week of March 25th

Don't forget to make reading a big part of your Spring Break!

Book of the Week: Grandma's Gloves by Cecil Castellucci and Julia Denos

Grandma's Gloves, written by Cecil Castellucci and illustrated by Julia Denos, was a nominee for the 2012-2013 South Carolina Picture Book Award.

The young girl in this story loves spending time with her grandmother, especially in the garden. Grandma teaches her everything she knows about gardening. When Grandma becomes sick with Alzheimer's disease (based on the context of the story), the girl points out that Grandma always remembers to feed and care for her plants.

Eventually, Grandma passes away, and the girl is extremely saddened by the loss of one of the most important people in her world. She finds solace and a closeness with her grandmother's memory in one of the things that she and her grandma shared--gardening.

I think this book deals with a topic that nearly all young people will have to face--the death of a loved one. Grandma's Gloves demonstrates that it's okay to be sad and that the memories of those lost can always be kept alive.

March of Dimes Reading Champions

Last week, packets for the March of Dimes Reading Champions program were sent home. This is an educational program in which every student is a winner! Children read books to improve their reading skills while raising money for the March of Dimes mission to prevent birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. After completing the program, participating students will receive awards for their efforts.

Students receive medals during awards day ceremonies. Medals are based on the number of books a child reads.

  • 30 books - Gold medal
  • 20-29 books - Silver medal
  • 15-19 books - Bronze medal

Bonus: Every participating school will have a Caldecott Award winning book donated to the library!

Please encourage your child to participate in this program. Remember to mail in the registration card as soon as possible. Mail in the book list, sponsor list, and all money to the March of Dimes prior to April 10th. (No materials or money should be sent to the school.)

If you have any questions about this program, please contact Ms. Knight in the library.
