Winter Blues Buster #1- Waking up

Having a hard time waking up on those winter mornings? Try putting a timer on your light and have it turn on a 1/2 hour before your alarm goes off. A bright Fluorescent light does the best job. This helps stimulate an artificial dawn!

Wednesday, February 17:

  • Cross-Stitching club 3:30-4:30 @ Red Barn
  • LE visits from Kindergartners continue
Thursday, February 18:
  • SteAm Club 3:30-4:30 pm @ Art Center
  • Kindergartners, 3rd years, 6th years continue moving up visits

Saturday, February 20:

  • Last day to order March lunches

Winter Blues Buster #2 - Sunlight

Expose yourself to sunlight as early in the day as you can, even go outside for a few minutes!

The Importance of Disaster Prevention....

Response to ANY Emergency ...
  • Assess Safety issues first
  • Notify the Head of the School and 911, if necessary
  • seal off high-risk area(s)
  • Take charge of the area(s) until the incident is contained or relieved by the Head of the School, a member of the Crisis Response Team, or law enforcement.
  • Preserve evidence, Keep detailed notes of incident.
  • Refer media to the Head of the School.

Winter Blues Buster #3 - artificial light

Investing in a light box will work by reducing the release of melatonin in the brain. Using a light box daily, in the early morning, for 30 minutes to two hours at a time, can bring quick results , some as soon as 2 weeks!

Winter Blues Buster #4 - Exercise

Did you know that one hour of exercise outside (even when it is cloudy) will accomplish the same results as using a light box for 2.5 hours? Exercise will increase your serotonin levels which contribute to winter depression.

PT Conference Scheduling:

We had a lot of positive feedback about the new online PT Conference scheduling, therefore, we will be using the same system for the upcoming conferences in March. You will be able to go in to your account effective Wednesday, February 17th to make changes to the preferences and/or to block off times for breaks in your schedule. The scheduling will be open to parents effective Friday, February 19th with an announcement in the Community Memo.

- To log in go to the Staff Login tab and type in your username and password that is specific to you.


You may then view your schedule and make adjustments as needed.


Teachers with Oak Farm students: please be sure to schedule your own PT Conference for your own child(ren) as soon as possible to ensure your space. Also remember to block off those times in your own classroom if applicable.

Winter Blues Buster #5 - be careful of your cravings

When your serotonin levels are low, you will crave carbohydrates. Especially junk food! These foods raise your serotonin level resulting in a better mood. So the next time you want to reach for the chocolate, try going for a walk instead. (I know easier said than done!)

Winter Blues Buster #6 - vitamins

Taking a good multivitamin containing vitamin D-3 daily will help give you a little energy boost and also help fight the winter blues.

A New Segment...

I am creating a new segment called "Sitting spot word of the Week". In this piece of the Monday Memo, I want to focus on words that remind us of the natural surrounding world. Nature is so much a part of the Montessori community and being educators, we point our students to nature to look for knowledge. So no matter what age you are, nature continues to teach us at a deeper and richer level. I hope you enjoy!

Winter Blues Buster #7 - Graditute

Accepting the season can be difficult at times when we haven't seen the sun in a while, but we all have something to be grateful for! So take the time (even if it is in your head) and write down all that you have to be thankful for!
