Book 9: Summary
Quotes
Analysis: This is why Polyphemus is calling out his father for help after Odysseus had blinded him. This is an important quote because it is one of the reasons it takes Odysseus so long to get home.
Quote: '"Stranger, you are a simple fool, or come from far off, when you tell me to avoid the wrath of the gods or fear them. The Cyclopes do not concern themselves over Zeus of the aegis, nor any of the rest of the blessed gods, since we are far better than they…"'
Analysis: This quote shows how the Cyclopes do not believe in Gods. It is the main reason that Poseidon is mad at Odysseus because if the Cyclopes were welcoming like all other people the conflict between the two would've never happened.
Themes
Pride: Odysseus has a lot to be proud of he has a hot and loyal wife, the city of Ithaca, he is smart and brave. A little bit of pride is good but too much isn't like when he yelled his real name to taunt the Cyclopes was too far.
Lies and Deceit: People fake a lot of things in the book. Odysseus tells Polyphemus that his name is nobody. Athena is dressing up as different people to help Tele. Penelope lies about the blanket she is making and then undoing every night.
