News from the Nurse
It is hard to believe we have been back in school for a month. If you have not completed your Emergency Notification in parent portal, please do so. This Emergency Notification is taking the place of the blue census verification forms that used to come home. It is important that we have this information so we can treat your child and know the most current phone numbers so we can reach you in an emergency.
If you are the parent of a Kindergarten, Third or Sixth Grade student please return the physical and or dental form which is required by Pennsylvania School Health Department by October 15th.

Cold & Flu Season
It is that time of year, time to start talking with your family about how to protect yourselves from colds and the flu.
Unfortunately, there are hundreds of cold viruses and that is why we get many colds throughout our lifetime. It is hard to build up immunity to that many viruses. Colds come on slowly and make you feel uncomfortable for about 7 days. High fevers are not associated with the common cold however you could run a low -grade temperature. The symptoms include sore throat, headache, a runny or stuffy nose, cough, and sneezing.
The flu is caused by the influenza virus which infects the lungs, nose and throat. The flu comes on suddenly, causes high fevers and makes you feel quite bad for up to 2 weeks. Other symptoms of the flu include severe headaches, muscle and body aches, exhaustion and dry cough. Children can have additional symptoms including nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Children are two to three times more likely to get the flu and they frequently spread it to others. The flu is spread person to person through coughing and sneezing. You can get the flu from touching germ-infested surfaces.
Tips for Keeping Your Family Healthy
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend getting a flu shot for all family members. This is the best way to prevent getting the flu.
Talk to your child about good handwashing and practice washing for at least 20 seconds.
Teach your child to cough or sneeze into the bend of their arm. If they use a tissue teach them to dispose of them in a trash can.
Teach your child to avoid touching their eyes, nose and mouth.
Teach them to avoid sharing drinks, water bottles and silver-wear.
Do not send your child to school with a fever. It is important for them to stay home from school, rest and drink plenty of fluids.
