Bolton Hill Nursery Weekly Update
Friday, March 6, 2020
Message from the Executive Director
We have three important topics this week:
COVID-19 virus planning
As of this writing early Friday afternoon, we are still in "proactive/common sense mode" when considering the effect a Maryland outbreak could have on BHN. Earlier today you received an important message from us about cleanliness and the ways you can assist our community. Please do remember to bring home all of your child's personal items this week!
Since there is a chance the Governor could announce region- or state-wide closings of schools and childcare centers, please be sure your cell number is registered on the 'REMIND' emergency text service we subscribe to. Click here to register. In the event BHN must close, this is how we will alert our families initially. **Please note if you signed up in the previous school year (ie. 2018-2019) you will not get messages until you join the "class" for the 2019-2020 school year.**
Of course we hope this won't happen! But in the event it does, I asked our teachers yesterday for tips for parents regarding supplies to have in the household should you find yourself caring for your children for an extended period of time. Their answer was simple: plenty of paper - different types if possible - brand new markers, stickers, ribbon, pipe cleaners, scotch tape, cardboard... whatever you can find that they can mess around and create with. Your kids are easily engaged when presented with materials. And NEW materials are even more enticing for them!
We also assure you, in the event a closing happens, we will assist you in any way we can during this time. BHN teachers will maintain the class See Saw site (details about how this will work forthcoming in the event we must close). This will include daily tips/ideas about activities to engage the children. We have other ideas about how best to be there as a small support for your family and will send out an email with complete details should a closing be required. LET'S HOPE IT ISN'T!
Bolton Swim and Tennis Club (BST) closing for 3 weeks
Our playground at BST will be closed for three weeks starting Monday, March 9. The club is installing a new underground irrigation system. For the three week duration, all of our Yellow- and Redbird children will have outside time on our own property. This will mean some slight adjustments to the Bluebird outside time schedule since they will now share outside space with the older children. We didn't expect this situation, and we don't think BST did either. However, we know it's a really good thing for BST and we want to do our part to ensure it can happen! An important change for YB and RB parents during this time is that all pm pickups will take place at 204 W. Lanvale St.
Swimming days this summer
Yellowbird and Redbird level children signed up for our summer program have swim time at BST twice a week. Several parents have asked when our swim days will be since they want to plan their child's schedule around those days. BST has finally told us what days we can swim: Wednesdays and Fridays. If this means you would like to change the days on your summer contract, please let Kelly know ASAP. We will accept contract day changes through next Friday, 3/13/20.
Let's all continue to fervently hope that our world is not upended by a public health emergency in the next few weeks. And in the meantime...
Have an excellent weekend!
Beth

Parakeets
The Parakeet classroom is atwitter with ideas about how to fill each other’s buckets: sharing toys, giving compliments, and lending a helping hand whenever it’s needed.continued their reflective unit on kindness, friendship, and feelings. They decorated clear cups to fill with colorful pompoms each time they go out of their way to be a fantastic friend. The Parakeets also made paper bag puppets, because it helps to have a friend who is always ready for a conversation. We gathered even more great books about handling anger, jealousy, and disagreements with friends. As luck would have it, Ms. Jackie’s recent Spanish lessons have focused on feelings, and how to show them and recognize them. We hope all our Parakeet friends greet the coming week with warm hearts and full buckets.

Firecrown Hummingbirds
This week the Firecrown Hummingbirds got a surprise!!!!! Our new class pets, the tadpoles! We can't wait to brainstorm a list of names, and vote on which names to pick! We started talking about the scientific method, and how important it is to ask questions about things we don't know about. We learned what it means to do research (asking, looking, talking about an event, person, or thing) and finished up researching African-American inventors. We noticed that our classroom kitchen is transforming into something new... We don't know what yet but we can't wait for next week to find out!! Have a great weekend! XO The Firecrown Hummingbirds
