CLX 5th News
Happy New Year and Welcome Back!!!
Please consider purchasing a new set of earbuds for your daughter/son. Having a personal set is helpful when completing iReady assignments or assessments. Thanks!
Please remember a D.C. payment is due this month on January 19th. Thanks for keeping your payments up to date! Scholarship requests will be processed soon.
And we're all getting geared up for our MLK Day of Service! (see below for more info)
permission slips will be coming home this week. MLK day of service is Friday, Jan. 12th
Please consider completing this short survey that's being distributed to all ACS Elementary and Middle Schools on behalf of Project Recess, a committee of PTO representatives from each district elementary and middle school.
What: Project Recess is reaching out to all Parents, Guardians, Teachers and Staff members across the school district to gather their opinions about reinstating daily recess for pre-K through 8th grade students. All responses are completely anonymous.
Why: Your input is crucial because it will represent the district as a whole. Once all survey responses are received, the data will be presented to the ACS School Board at its February 2018 meeting. Our hope is that an official recess policy change will be made for the 2018-19 school year.
When: Please complete this survey by Friday, January 12.

CLOTHING
Please have students dress warmly in clothes that can get dirty. It would also be good to bring water, a snack, and maybe an extra pair of socks in case we get some wet feet. Students should bring rain boots if they have them.
PARENT VOLUNTEERS
All volunteers/chaperones will need to come to the office Friday morning and sign in on the computer before going to the breakfast or to volunteer sites. If you are a chaperone and have never signed in before, you will need to bring your driver’s license and have it scanned so you can be entered in our system.
Parents will not be able to ride on buses. Chaperones will have to meet us at the site locations or follow the buses.
In case activities need to be canceled due to inclement weather, we will still be holding the breakfast.
Mr. Ackerman has updated the spreadsheet so parent volunteers know where they have been assigned.
GUEST SPEAKER
Our amazing guest speaker is Ms. Ja'Wana Grier-McEachin. Ms. Grier-McEachin is Secretary of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Association of Asheville & Buncombe County and head of ABIPA (Asheville Buncombe Institute of Parity Achevement) See attached bio. She will be introduced by her friend and colleague Dr. Elizabeth Colton.
CLX Magnet Theme Open House Volunteers
Hi all!
Claxton is hosting three Open House days for new families as a part of the Magnet School Enrollment for next year. We need volunteers to welcome new families and volunteers and to serve as tour guides (assisting some of our wonderful students who will also be helping out. Please click on the attached schedule and choose a time slot (or two!) as your schedule allows!
Couple of things to keep in mind:
+ You are exactly who we're looking for! There's no experience required to be a tour guide - other than your love for Claxton! We'll give everyone a brief outline of the main information you'll need.
+ Mr. Edwards and Mrs. Nichols will be on hand to answer any specific questions that prospective parents might have.
Thank you in advance for your help!

Reading- This week, as we return from break, we will be doing a short review of the standards previously taught. On Thursday and Friday, students will be taking the mid-year iReady diagnostic in order to assess their growth in reading. As we move forward, we will be ending quarter two focusing on standards RI..5.2 and RI.5.3.
RI.5.2 Determine two or more main ideas of a text and explain how they are supported by key details; summarize the text.
RI.5.3 Explain the relationships or interactions between two or more individuals, events, ideas, or concepts in a historical, scientific, or technical text based on specific information in the text.
Social Studies- We continue our study of the Revolutionary War this week. We will have a test on this unit next Wednesday, January 17th based on our notes, study guide, and primary source activities we have completed in class. Students will not be able to use notes on this assessment. We will study together in class with a variety of review activities. Most review will take place in class. However, if you want to help students study at home, you may refer to the following quizlets:
