Tashua School Weekly Update

Mrs. Neumeyer, Principal

March 17, 2023

Dear Tashua Families,

Happy St. Patrick's Day! It is so enjoyable to have longer, brighter days. Hopefully the warm weather will be soon to follow! Please be reminded, there will be no school on Monday, March 20th due to the district-wide professional development day for staff.

We had an exciting week at Tashua School. Students in grade 4 participated in a Sensitivity Awareness Day hosted by our PTA. This event is planned each year for this grade level to ensure all students are able to participate during their elementary experiences at Tashua. As part of this event, inspirational speaker Geri Mariano spoke to the students about perseverance, compassion and having the courage to stand up against bullying for over 20 years. Her talk focused on acceptance and awareness that difference does not mean different. She teaches how to use compassion and creativity to bring everyone together in classes, teams and on playgrounds. Geri uses motivational stories to demonstrate that we are different in many ways, yet we are all the same.

On Wednesday, Kindergarten students took their first out-of-school fieldtrip to the Downtown Cabaret Theater to see a performance of Jack and the Beanstalk.

As we continue to celebrate Women's History Month, our third grade students share morning messages highlighting women and events that made an impact in history. This week, students and staff learned about: Sojourner Truth, Elizabeth Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, Harriet Tubman and Elizabeth Blackwell.

This week we also kicked off the Tashua Read-a-Thon! Thank you goes out to our families who have signed up to participate. We are off to a great start and already surpassed 8994 minutes as of this morning. Keep up the great reading Tigers!

Further, please be reminded, student report cards are now available to be viewed electronically through the Infinite Campus Parent Portal via the More / Campus Backpack section. I couldn't be prouder of our students efforts! Please be sure to make some time to review your child's report card with him/her to acknowledge his/her accomplishments and set goals for further improvement.

Lastly, please be reminded, there will be two important upcoming opportunities for members of the Trumbull community to share their thoughts regarding the needs of our budget. The first opportunity is tomorrow morning, Saturday, March 18 at 10 AM in Town Council Chambers. The second opportunity is a virtual meeting on Tuesday, March 28 at 7:00 PM. If you would like to sign up for public comment, we encourage you to do so to share your thoughts. Please see Dr. Semmel's weekly update for more information: https://www.smore.com/8vc5r

March is National Nutrition Month!

We Can! (Ways to Enhance Children’s Activity & Nutrition) is a national education program designed to give parents and communities a way to help children learn to eat nutritious foods. As parents, you can do a lot to help your children learn healthy eating habits and maintain a healthy weight. Involving them in meal preparation and cooking can motivate them to try new foods – and is a good way to spend time together as a family.

What is a Healthy Diet?

A healthy eating plan is one that:

  • Emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat or fat-free milk products.
  • Includes lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts.
  • Is low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, sodium/salt, and added sugars.
  • Stays within your calorie needs.

Good nutrition is key to good health. Try a rainbow of fruits and vegetables for better health:

Choosing in season fruits and vegetables with a variety of colors like red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple will give you a variety of healthy nutrients.

Visit the WE CAN website for more information on healthy eating!
