Briggs- Rauscher Reaction
IO3- + 2 H2O2+ CH2(CO2H)2 + H+ --> ICH(CO2H)2 + 2 O2 + 3 H2O
This is known as an oscillating chemical reaction.
The colorless solution gradually turns an amber color, then quickly changes to a very dark blue color. After changing to dark blue, the color fades and again is colorless. This process repeats itself a good 10 times.
Potassium Chlorate and Gummy Bear
2KClO3(s) + heat ----> 2KCl(s) + 3O2(g)
The type of chemical reaction this is is: combustion.
When potassium chlorate is heated to melting point, any item that is added to it will cause rapid decomposition in form of an explosion.
Elephant Toothpaste
Elephant Toothpaste
2 H2O2(aq) ---> 2 H2O(l) + O2(g)
The type of reaction: decomposition.
The dishwashing detergent takes in the oxygen as bubbles.
Food coloring can color the foam. The heat from this reaction causes the foam to steam. If the
demonstration is performed using a plastic bottle, you can expect slight distortion of the bottle from the heat.
