Teaching is by far one of the most noble and influential professions on the planet. You help your students every day to become better learners, better thinkers, better people, and in doing so you become better teachers. Make no mistake- you are a hero to many children. Let that be one of the many reasons you continue to nurture the architects of the future.


As a teacher, you are the most important part of a young student's life. Your love of learning is infectious and inspiring to your students. Remember the best teacher you ever had and the relationship you formed with that mentor. Let that relationship be the blueprint for preparing your students for a better future. You are a tutor, a mentor, and a caregiver combined. You are the difference maker!


The best environment we can provide for our students are the ones that are filled with joy, ones that lead to student taking responsibility for their learning, and ones that inspire them to be a better person today than they were yesterday. What a difference it makes in a student's mind knowing that they've discovered the answer themselves, or been able to create it if it was not there. Thank you for your dedication to preparing our students for a better future.

Creating a Culture of Curiosity Video

This week's video is the winner of the best animation at Sweden's Short Film Festival in 2016.


This video would be great to pair up with the books by David Wiesner "Tuesday" and "June 29, 2009." The video and the books use picture to tell their story. You could have students pretend to be the author and write the plot. Or you could have the students write in the perspective of one of the characters in the stories. Or you could even have the students write a sequel to the stories. The possibilities are endless!


1. Pick a time to show the curiosity. The beginning or end of your day, or right before lunch would be perfect. You only need a few minutes.

2. Show the curiosity. Maybe say, “I want to show you something cool.”

3. After, ask students for their questions, comments, and connections. Maybe write them down in a unanswered question binder.

4. Don’t make them do any work to find the answers. If kids want to find the answer, they’ll find it on their own time. If not, then maybe it just wasn’t that interesting to them. And that’s fine.

5. Over time, your kids will get more comfortable being curious in your class.

A Small Escape

Recess

Thank you everyone for making safety a priority at recess. This is such an important part of our students day and below is what we believe about recess.


  • Recess is a necessary event in the day and should not be withheld for academic or punitive reasons.
  • Recess offers important breaks from concentrated classroom work, which allow children to be “more attentive and more productive in the classroom.”
  • Recess promotes social and emotional learning and development through peer interactions in which they practice and role play essential social skills. Children learn negotiation, cooperation, sharing, and problem solving, as well as coping skills, such as perseverance and self-control.
  • Recess offers benefits that are unique from, and a complement to, physical education — not a substitute for it.
  • Recess can help offset risks to childhood obesity that supplements, not supplants PE.

TAGT on Demand

Birdville’s license to TAGT Online classes will expire on May 31st. If you are currently taking classes for your update hours please try to finish them. The license will be renewed during the summer. Remember to submit your completed hours to Eduphoria.


There are several opportunities this summer for GT hours. At my meeting last Friday, the department decided the station trainings could count as 6 hours, if teachers design and implement stations during the 2016-2017 school year. I would highly recommend any of these courses!

Habitudes for Genius Learning (6 Hour Update)

Administrators and K-12 teachers

Angela Maiers, nationally known keynote speaker, will present a workshop on how to apply the 7 habitudes (imagination, curiosity, self-awareness, perseverance, courage, adaptability, and passion) to 21st century classrooms. She will offer teachers activities, tools and strategies that appeal to 21st century learners.

Online Campus Transfer Requests: March 21 - Summer

I have 2 primary goals as a principal and I see these as overlapping priorities: for every student to receive the best possible education and for every adult I serve to love doing this. If you for any reason would like to transfer to a different position, grade level or school- please let me know and I will do everything I can to help you. Reminders and Focus

  • The gates will be locked during school hours and can be opened by your key. During the school day (7:30-4:00 on none Aspire days: 7:00-6:00 on Aspire days) these gates are to be treated like an exterior door. Adults and teenagers should not enter these and should go through the main doors, even at dismissal.

  • Our goal is to be level 3 (or moving close to it) in most areas on the district rubric for TEKS centered teaching. I have seen many great examples of students interacting with the TEKS in class. Be sure to not only post them, but have discussions so that students understand the goal of their learning.
  • Continue to build strong, positive relationships with all the students. Smile often. Choose to see the good and positive. Focus on growth and celebrate often. Nothing is more helpful in the learning process than the effects of trust and joy.
  • PLC's should be meeting weekly to answer the 4 questions. Common Formative Assessments should done after mapping out the six weeks, then planning for learning should take place. If you need any support in this, please contact our coaches, Erin, and myself.
  • Rigor, relevance, and engagement strategies should be focus on when planning student learning tasks.
