Room 200 finished the first unit Who am I?. In this unit, we shared how we are different from our peers, we discussed things that we care about, and things that we can do. This week, we began our second unit What is a Family?. We read What Grandmas do Best by Laura Nemeroff to kick off our family unit. Students shared who is part of a family and how we feel when we are with our family. In the coming week, we will discuss how families show that they care for one another and learn about different family activities/traditions that take place.
Math
Room 200 continues to learn and recognize numbers. We created a "number board" and the students saw how when we add one more sticker to show the number below it, that stairs or a triangle appears!
Also, we've introduced interactive math notebooks. The students glued down the four shapes we've learned so far: triangle, rectangle, circle, and square. They were able to identify the shape name for each and glue down those names under a flap. The students loved being able to use an interactive notebook like their older siblings!
Additionally, we've started practicing writing our numbers with number poems.
Number Poems:
1 - One is fun! Straight down and then you're done.
2 - Around and back on a railroad track. You made a two just like that!
3 - Around the tree, around the tree, that's the way you make a three!
4 - Down and over, then down some more, that's the way you make a four!
5 - Go across then take a dive, around the bend and that's a five!
6 - Roll a hoop and make a loop, just that quick you've made a six!
7 - Straight across and down from heaven, that's the way you make a seven!
8 - Make an "s" but don't you wait, go right back up to make an eight!
9 - Make a loop and then a line, that's the way to make a nine!
10 - Straight down, around to win, that's the way you make a ten!
Fundations
Room 200 is continuing to learn new letter sounds and review previously learned sounds. Thus far, the children have learned the following letter names and sounds: t, b, f, n, m, u, and i. We have also learned how to write each letter using our own writing tablets. The letters t, b, and f all are "sky-line" letters and we begin writing them on the "sky-line". Letters n, m, u, and i are "plane-line" letters and we begin writing them on the "plane-line". Next week, we will learn the letter name-keyword-sound for the letters c and o. Please reference the Fundations Sound-Alphabet chart in the blue folder from Back-to-School Night to help reinforce our learned sounds. Many students are doing great recognizing their sounds. Please continue to reinforce these sounds at home!
Journeys
Journeys newsletters are now online at my eboard! Please feel free to review these so you are up to date on what we're learning in reading.
Students have completed Lesson 2 and 3. We learned the sight words I, like, and the. We read the books, How does a Dinosaur go to School? and Please, Puppy, Please. With How does a Dinosaur go to School?, we discussed how we can describe a character by looking carefully at the pictures, words, and what they say. We also looked at story structure (characters, setting, problem, solution) with Please, Puppy, Please.
Writing Workshop
Writing Workshop is going wonderfully in Room 200. The writers of Room 200 composed their very first book. We learned how to visualize a topic we know a lot about. We discussed how writers don't just write, yet they plan out what will go on every page before they even pick up their pencil to write. We also talked about how writers stick to one topic for a book.
Some students wrote a book about tornadoes, legos, playing baseball, gymnastics, hide-and-seek, etc. Partners checked to see if their book stuck to one topic and all of the students' books did!
