MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL OPHUS
Dear Fairview Families,
I hope you all had a wonderful spring break and that you were able to spend some quality time together as a family! It was great to see our students both remotely and in person again this week. As we look ahead, this is just a reminder that we have no school tomorrow, Friday, April 2nd. Next week, Tuesday, April 6th is a previously scheduled district-wide institute day. Thursday, April 8th and Friday, April 9th are recently added institute days to give staff time to prepare for our upcoming change to full in-person/full remote instruction beginning on April 12th.
By the end of the day on Monday, April 5th, all families will receive an email with their updated teacher assignment with changes set to begin on Monday, April 12th. Many students will remain with their current teacher, however, changes were inevitable. In some cases, students will end up having a third teacher. This will be true for between 5% and 10% of students. There are a few scenarios where this commonly occurred. For example, when we made changes on January 19th, if a student whose parents wanted them to remain in a remote setting had a teacher who was assigned to hybrid, this required a class change. For that same student, if they now wanted to go in-person but their teacher was going to remain as a remote teacher, the child likely ended up in a third classroom. In some cases there was room to return to the original teacher, but in most cases, those teachers already have full classrooms. Similarly, if that same student was going to continue learning remotely, but their teacher was now assigned to work in person, they also likely ended up in a third classroom. In a few cases, student programming related needs required a student to change to a third homeroom teacher. In all cases, my goal was to keep students with their same teacher or return them to their original teacher, but it was impossible to make this happen for all students. I wanted to give you a little background prior to receiving your assignment on Monday in the event you see that your child has another new teacher.
As we have students who will be coming to school in person for the first time this school year coming up on April 12th, I wanted to share our expectations video once again that was shared earlier this year. Please take a moment to watch this with your child if they are starting up in-person for the first time to best prepare him or her for this transition. In addition, I wanted to give all families who have children coming in person some updates about lunch, recess and specials that are not shared in the video. Teachers will explain all of this to students, but feel free to share it with them prior to the first day if you think it would help them.
All students will be eating lunch in either their classroom, the art room, or in the multipurpose room. In all cases, students will be six feet apart during lunch when masks are off and students are eating.
It is likely that students will eat in the classroom one week and then the multipurpose room the next so that the teachers who are helping with lunch duty are not only eating with the same smaller group of students every week. The maximum number of students in a classroom at one time is thirteen students in order to maintain six feet of distance while eating, which is required in the new state guidance.
Students are required to be facing the same direction while eating rather than facing each other. Once they are done eating and put their masks back on, they are free to face one another once again.
Portable dividers will be put up on students’ desks or on table tops while eating. After eating, students will put their mask back on, wipe the divider to disinfect it, and then can take it down. Students are free to enjoy conversation during the lunch hour.
Recess will take place in different zones around our school grounds. Each zone will have one or two classes of students within it and will be supervised by one of our recess supervisors. This is done to make contact tracing possible in the event that we have a case of COVID. Students will rotate to each zone with each passing week so that they can all enjoy the different scenery around the school grounds. Students will still wear their masks during recess.
Students will travel to special area classes for their music, art, PE and LRC time. These teachers will mirror seating charts of the classroom teacher to minimize close contacts. Any shared supplies will be disinfected between use. Students will also travel to special support classes, related services, and accelerated/enrichment instruction, and the same safety rules apply in these settings.
These are the primary changes that will be new for students that have not already been in place while we have been instructing with our hybrid model. Other than these items, we will continue utilizing our same procedures throughout the school day. As Dr. Aumiller noted in her message on March 19th, temperature scanners are no longer recommended for use in the updated state guidance document, but we will continue to require the Raptor pre-screener for all families attending in person each day. I know there was a lot of information shared in this update. Please contact me, your child’s teacher or the school office if you have any questions as we prepare for the upcoming changes on April 12th. Have a great three day weekend!
Sincerely,
Dan Ophus

DONATE TO DISTRICT 57 FAMILIES IN NEED
COVID-19 has presented many unique hardships and challenges for some of our family members, friends and neighbors. Some parents have asked if it’s possible to make a financial donation to help support District 57 families who are currently in need. The District has set up a system to facilitate this for anyone who is interested. We will distribute the collected funds to families, based on formal requests that are made. If you would like to donate, simply go to this link and follow these steps:
- Click on “Make a one-time payment.”
- Fill in your student’s name, school and grade.
- Click “COVID-19 Donation to District 57 Families.”
- Fill in your information and donation amount, then proceed to the payment section.
Thank you so much, in advance, for your kindness and generosity.
Those who are in need of support can fill out this online form. Names will only be seen by select district personnel who are distributing the funds.
Thank you,
