Five People I Admire

Danny Park's Models

Jim Rogers

Brief Bio:

As a former Wall Street worker, Jim Rogers retired at the age of 38 in order to travel around the world. He is most famously known for his books Hot Commodities, Investment Biker, and Adventure Capitalist, last of which details his road travel around the world as he analyzes the financial profitability of each country he visits. He has bachelor’s degree from Yale and Oxford University.

How He Has Influenced Me:

While I am certainly jealous of his early retirement, I am even more jealous of his adventurous spirit and ability to foretell the future outlook through the present. His eyes see what others see and yet his mind is thinking differently. With great knowledge base of history, he can fit into any social groups around the world and befriend whoever he wants to. I admire his knowledge and sharp insight.

Christopher Langan

Brief Bio:

Abused by his stepfather at an early age, Christopher Langan began weight training during his childhood and forcibly kicked his stepfather out of his house. Despite of the discouraging environment while growing up, he excelled at high school and went on to college. While at college however, he found the classes boring and dropped out, confident in his ability to teach himself. With reported IQ of 200, he has worked as a cowboy, a construction worker, forest service firefighter, and a bouncer at night clubs.

How He Has Influenced Me:
Christopher Langan embodies everything that an active learner should have. Before I learned about Langan, I was complaining to my parents about all the tools that I do not have in order to perform well at school. Langan’s initiative attitude to solve problems instead of passively whining like me is something that I hoped to acquire in the future. I admire his self-confidence and willingness to risk what other people have not tried.

John Nash

Brief Bio:

Although John Nash suffered from paranoid schizophrenia, he was a mathematical genius. After receiving bachelor’s and master’s degree in mathematics from Carnegie Mellon University, he went on to Princeton University with scholarship to pursue the subject further. His insightful theories in differential geometry and partial differential equation is used across several academic fields today. Most famous for his game theory, John Nash won a Nobel prize in economic sciences in 1994.

How He Has Influenced Me:
Despite of his severe illness, Nash has achieved not only mathematical feats but also developed prize-winning theories that are widely used to understand the complex relationship of events occurring in daily life. His intelligence is admirable, but his perseverance and work ethics are what make him one of the people I look up to.

Randy Pausch

Brief Bio:

Born on October 23 1960, Randy Pausch fell in love with programming. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Brown University then a Ph. D. from Carnegie Mellon University, he went on to work for big name companies like Walt Disney Imagineering, Electronic Arts, and Adobe Systems before settling on computer science professorship at Carnegie Mellon University. In 2006, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. As a way to leave some kind of legacy for his wife and children, Pausch used the last few months of his life to give a “last lecture” on his own life and how he overcame hardships. This inspiring lecture soon became sensational and was published as a book which became New York Times bestseller.

How He Has Influenced Me:

Reading about Randy has made me reflect on my own life: if I had only a few months left to live and had to present my life in front of people, what would I talk about? Despite of the tragic terminal diagnosis, Randy’s will to stay positive until the end has made me ashamed of my short patience. His upbeat attitude and incomparable love for his family are somethings that I look up to.

Chan Park

Brief Bio:

A former employee of Samsung, my dad has worked in the S. Korean business field for more than 20 years before quitting his job in order to emigrate to America with family. He has won grants from Samsung in order to improve his English by coming to America before. He loved what he experienced there and ever since decided to save up enough money in order to emigrate with his family. Now, he owns and manages an Italian restaurant, making him an excellent chef.

How He Has Influenced Me:

Although he is no longer the “superman” that I once believed him to be as a child, his love and all the sacrifices he has made for me and my sister make him not only my father figure but also someone I hoped to be later for my own children. His willingness to sacrifice his work and social connections in order to emigrate to America and give me better opportunities are something that I would never be able to repay back.
