Neurons

A nerve cell; the basic building block of the nervous system.

Brain stem

The oldest part and central core of the brain. Responsible for automatic survival functions.

Medulla

Base of the brain stem; controls heartbeat and breathing.

Thalamus

The brains sensory control center; located on top of the brain stem.

Reticular formation

A nerve network that travels through the brain stem; controls arousal.

Cerebellum

At the rear end on the brain stem; Controls balance, posture and movement.

Limbic system

Located below the cerebral hemisphere. Associated with emotions and drives.

Amygdala

Located in the limbic system; linked to emotion

Hypothalamus

Located below the thalamus; associated with eating, drinking, and body temperature

The Cerebral Cortex

Frontal lobes

Located behind the forehead; involves speaking, muscle movement, and making judgments

Parietal lobes

Located at the top of the head and toward the rear; relieves sensory input for touch and body position.

Occipital lobes

Located at the back of the head; areas that receive info through the visual fields.

Temporal lobes

Located above the ears; each receiving information from the opposite ear.

Motor cortex

Located at the rear end of the frontal lobe; controls voluntary movement.

Somatosensory cortex

Located at the front of the parietal lobe; it processes body touch and movement sensations
