Each year the students in the state of Kansas have an opportunity to read and vote for a book that they would like see win the William Allen White Award. We have introduced this to our students at Garfield and we have watched the book trailers for each of the books on the Grades 3-5 list. There is also a list for middle school as well. The link for the master lists is http://www.emporia.edu/libsv/wawbookaward/masterlists/. We have this in the library at Lincoln. This works very well with your iPad and the AppleTV or you can hard wire to your projector as well. You can project books, student work examples, etc. You can use your iPad camera to project the image or you can use Stage or StagePro (FREE right now) https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/stage-pro-interactive-whiteboard/id714477455?mt=8. My favorite holiday of the year is quickly approaching. We celebrate what we are thankful for and we do this with family and friends. In honor of Thanksgiving we will be reading Thank You, Sarah The Woman Who Saved Thanksgiving by Laurie Halse Anderson in 3rd grade, I know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Pie by Alison Jackson in 2nd grade, A Turkey for Thanksgiving by Diane de Groat in 1st Grade, and The Berenstain Bears Count Their Blessings by Stan & Jan Berenstain in Kindergarten.
On Friday we will see:
3rd Grade - Bent/Edwards - We will be reviewing call numbers. We will practice putting call numbers in shelf order and each student will get a part of a call number, fiction or nonfiction, and will then add their last name as the author and find where they would placed in the library.
2nd Grade - Swihart/Crimmins - We will look at several examples of fiction and nonfiction books. As a class we will create a Venn diagram of fiction and nonfiction. The students will then work with a partner and two books to create their own Venn Diagram.
1st Grade - Hays/Carr - We will be finishing our nonfiction frog book and we will review the differences that we found between our Froggy book and the nonfiction frog book. The students will then work in groups with a fiction and nonfiction book to determine which is fiction and which is nonfiction.
Kindergarten - Savage/Richter - We are going to learn the parts of the book and we will be reading Dewey There's a Cat in the Library. The students will then hold a book in their hands and we will play library lady says for parts of the book.

Throw your tooth on the roof : tooth traditions from around the world by Selby Beeler - What do you do when you lose a tooth? Do you put it under your pillow and wait for the tooth fairy? Not if you live in Botswana! In Botswana, children throw their teeth onto the roof. In Afghanistan they drop their teeth down mouse holes, and in Egypt they fling their teeth at the sun! Travel around the world and discover the surprising things children do when they lose a tooth. Selby B. Beeler spent years collecting traditions from every corner of the globe for this whimsical book, and illustrator G. Brian Karas adds to the fun, filling every page with humorous detail. He perfectly captures the excitement and pride that children experience when a tooth falls out. (Amazon.com)

We will not see our Tuesday classes due to teacher in-service.
We will see Mrs. Pfizenmaier and Mrs. Deines on Thursday.
We will continue to work on the Dewey decimal system and how to find what they are looking for in the nonfiction and fiction section of the library. The students will get with their "like" scavenger hunt buddies to make sure they have the right information to take back to their table to teach the others about their section of the library.

House of Secrets by Chris Columbus -
Siblings Brendan, Eleanor, and Cordelia Walker once had everything they could ever want. But everything changed when Dr. Walker lost his job. Now the family must relocate to an old Victorian house, formerly the home of occult novelist Denver Kristoff—a house that simultaneously feels creepy and too good to be true. By the time the Walkers realize that one of their neighbors has sinister plans for them, they’re banished to a primeval forest way off the grid.
Bloodthirsty medieval warriors patrol the woods around them, supernatural pirates roam the neighboring seas, and a power-hungry queen rules the land. To survive, the siblings will have to be braver than they ever thought possible—and to fight against their darkest impulses. The key may lie in their own connection to the secret Kristoff legacy. But as they unravel that legacy, they’ll discover that it’s not just their family that’s in danger . . . it’s the entire world. (summary from Amazon.com)
