PATRIOT PRESS
PLEASANT VALLEY MIDDLE SCHOOL * * * January 18, 2021
Welcome to another edition of our Patriot Press
We hope that you all had a good holiday break. Students and staff seem to be getting back into the groove of school and making connections. Thank you all for your help in sharing your learning choice of hybrid or remote learning when we get to that point. There is so much work and scheduling that takes place to accommodate students and families. We certainly appreciate you all helping us out. This Wednesday is picture day and all of the information that you need to know is below. We will continue to keep our community informed of any changes with school programs as we move forward. Hopefully everyone's MLK day was great and we will see the students back in zooms tomorrow. Thanks and have a great night.
Sincerely,
Mike Maloney, Principal
We are happy to have all of the students back after the holidays. We just want to remind everyone that our iReady testing window ends this week so please help us out if your child hasn't completed this assessment as it assists us with proper placement of the students into programs. Thank you so much.
Mrs. Leeper
Assistant Principal

iReady Assessment Completion - Test window Closes 1/21/21
Your students have been assigned the task of taking the iReady assessments in both math and reading. The testing window closes on January 21st. If your students could please complete these assessments as soon as possible it will help us to ensure that we are meeting student's educational needs to the best of our abilities.
The iReady assessments give us critical information regarding your students ELA and Math proficiency levels. Teachers have communicated the deadlines for completion with your students. If you have questions or need support please contact your student's ELA/Math teacher or the office.
We appreciate your partnership in gathering this important data. Have an excellent evening Patriots.
Middle School Picture Day Wednesday, January 20th
Hello PVM Families,
This is a reminder that school pictures will be taken on Wednesday January 20th in the PVM gym. Ordering pictures online is preferred. You can pre-order pictures online at: Order Pictures Here. You can also use the packet that was sent to you by Bell Studios. Packet information is attached to this email. You will need to print and complete the form and include payment for pictures. Your student will need to bring the packet with them. Pictures will be mailed to the address you provide online or on the packet. Please come have a photo taken even if you do not plan to purchase photos, so your student's picture will appear in our school yearbook and on their school ID card.
If your student is ill or experiencing covid-like symptoms, or has been exposed to someone who has covid, please wait until picture re-take day, (yet to be determined), to have their photo taken. Students must be able to successfully attest to enter the photography area. Download the attestation form below to see what students will attest to.
We will be following all safety guidelines:
Please pull up to the curb in front of the school. Parents/guardians should remain in their car at the curb, please don't go park.
Students will need to either bring their completed picture packet and payment, or have ordered and paid online if purchasing photos.
Students need to wear a mask and will go to the big gym, south main door, and line up on a dot inside after attesting.
After having their picture taken, students will exit the big gym through the north door and walk around to their vehicle.
Each grade level will have their own photo time slot as follows:
5th Grade 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM
6th Grade 12:30 PM - 2:00 PM
7th Grade 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM
8th Grade 3:30 PM - 5:00 PM
We will have a time slot from 5 - 6 PM for those families who cannot make the earlier times.
If you have more than one student at PVM, for example a 5th grader and a 7th grader, you can choose either to attend the 5th grade time slot or the 7th grade time slot.
If you have any questions contact the school office at 360 885-5500.
Thank you and have a nice evening.

8th Grade Materials Distribution/Book Return, January 27th, 10am-2pm

Levy Information
BGPS will have a replacement educational programs and operations levy on the Feb. 9, 2021 ballot.
Key points of the district’s replacement levy are:
- Replacement levy will decrease the tax rate in the first year (2022) to $1.95 per $1,000.
- The district plans to dip into its rainy day reserve fund and drop the tax rate as low as it can the first year.
- Battle Ground Public Schools has the lowest property tax rate of all K-12 districts in Clark County.
- The levy will allow the district to maintain critical student programs and activities not fully funded by the state and to maintain facilities.
- The levy will be for four years, 2022–2025.
- After the first year, the replacement levy rate will go to a projected rate of $2.20 per $1,000, but will still be less than the current levy rate.
For more complete information about this levy, please visit the BGPS Levy website.

- The staff will record the date and time on the application form when it is received by the school and forward it for release to the resident school.
- The resident principal will release the student and forward the form back to the principal at the requested school.
- The principal at the requested school will accept the transfer or deny it and mark the reason for denial.
- The requested school will send copies of the form to the appropriate persons or schools.
For 8th-grade students who want to attend a high school other than their resident high school, the process is:
- Request the in-district student transfer form from the current middle school.
- Return the completed form to the requested high school with the registration papers.
- Staff will record the date and time on the application form when it is received by the school.
Out-of-district Boundary Exception Applications, letter of intent may be submitted Jan.11th, applications may be submitted starting May 3rd.

Notes from the Nurse
Hello PVM Families,
I can not believe we are already through the holiday season! I want to say thank you to everyone who is wearing masks, maintaining social distancing and continuing to frequently hand wash. These things alone do make a difference for others and ourselves.
Remember, it is so important to not gather in groups, for your health and safety and the safety of others. Make time to socialize in other ways. Here is the link about gathering from Washington State Corona Virus Response:
In anticipation of the soon-to-be-released vaccine for Covid-19, I encourage you to be informed, and strongly encourage you to consider the vaccine for you and your family. There are several reliable resources related to the vaccine. I recommend checking out the National Institutes of Health at: https://www.nih.gov/coronavirus or Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; here is the link to Covid 19 specific information: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/vaccine-benefits/facts.html
Let’s work together to stay safe and healthy.
Sincerely,
Nurse Nancy Boldt, BSN RN

Social-Emotional Supports

NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is also a great resource: NAMI
Mrs. McCann's Google Classroom.
I will be sharing topics weekly in my Google classroom. Please remind your students to join my Google classroom if they have not done so already. Links were emailed to them at the beginning of the school year to join.

Family and Community Resource Center
Battle Ground Public Schools’ Family and Community Resource Center (FCRC) helps meet the needs of families faced with housing instability and similar economic challenges.
While a main goal of the FCRC is to assist families experiencing housing instability, it can also help connect families with many other types of resources and is intended to respond to the changing needs of the community.
The FCRC is a continuation of the district’s joint efforts with the Battle Ground Education Foundation, an all-volunteer, nonprofit community organization whose purpose is to leverage community resources to help maintain quality education for all students in Battle Ground schools.
The Family Resource Guide is full of contacts to aid families in connecting with agencies who are able to help with a great variety of needs. Please click the link below to view this helpful guide.

Attendance - Absence Reporting
- State reporting codes require absences be excused by a parent or guardian within three days of the return of the student to school.
- We may not accept student excuses for their own absences.
- We understand that at times an absence may be unavoidable, such as for limited medical appointment times, illness, internet failures, or a family emergency. Consistent participation dramatically increases student success in school. We ask that if at all possible, appointments and vacation time be scheduled to avoid having students miss their direct instruction time in Zoom meetings.
- In addition to a parent/guardian reporting the absence to the office, if students are aware they will be missing several days of school (due to traveling etc) please have them email all of their teachers to arrange for make up work.
