Hajj
What happens during Hajj?
Day 1:
On day one of arriving in Mecca, pilgrims leave the city and head to an area called Mina, where they spend the day in prayer. Here over 100,000 tents have been set up as temporary shelter for the pilgrims in what looks like a huge tent city.Day 2:
On the day Arafat, pilgrims spend the entire day atop of a hill named Mount Arafat. Muslims believe This is considered to be a great day of forgiveness. Muslims believe that if you spend this day in a state of true repentance, all past sins will be forgiven.
Day 3:
Pilgrims spend the night in an area called Muzdalifa, which is halfway between Mina and Arafat. Here, the pilgrims spend their time in prayer and also gather pebbles for the ritual the next day.
Day 4:
The Jamarat is a ritual and symbolic stoning of the devil. Three pillars, some small, medium, and large, are stoned by pebbles the pilgrims collected the day before.
Day 5:
Pilgrims return to Mecca for the final tawaf, circling the Ka´aba, The Ka'aba is an ancient stone structure in Mecca which all Muslims around the world face to pray five times a day. Pilgrims walk around, or circumambulate, it seven times in a counter clockwise direction.
Impact of Islam in the World Today
Medicine and healthcare are also large contributions the Muslims shared with civilization as well as the university system. Later after the University System was created, in Cairo, Egypt, the Ahmad ibn Tulun hospital was created. Like other Islamic hospitals created soon after, Tulun was open to anyone in Egypt(Men, Women, Rich or Poor). It was one of the earliest hospitals in civilization to care for the mentally ill. One hundred years after the Tulun was created, an Egyptian surgeon named Al-Zahrawi, nicknamed ¨The father of surgery¨ wrote an illustrated guide to surgery that would be passed on for hundreds of more years. Al-Zahrawi´s surgical tools are still used by modern day surgeons such as forceps, bone saws, and scalpels.
