Options-Based Emergency Response - Follow-Up
As planned, our students were introduced to our new enhanced lockdown or options-based emergency response procedures yesterday. We did NOT simulate gunfire or other violent situations with our students and great care was taken to ensure our language and content was age appropriate. In all classrooms, teachers reviewed an introductory presentation that included topics listed below:
- Overview of all emergency drills that schools practice (fire, tornado, bus evacuations)
- Discussion about "stranger danger" at school
- Discussion about dangerous situations at school
- An emphasis on listening to adults at school when there is an emergency
- Introduction to ALICE principles and the ALICE acronym
- An emphasis on the idea of being PREPARED, not scared. Including a read aloud of the Julia Cook book, I'm Not Scared, I'm Prepared.
We recognize that school safety is an emotional topic and careful consideration has been taken throughout this process. You may want to talk to your child about what they learned. To aid you in these conversations at home, we have resources listed below.
Please know that student safety is our top priority. We will continue to partner with local law enforcement and families to ensure a safe learning environment for our children. This week's lesson is part of our ongoing plan. We will have additional lessons/practice planned that will continue to build on students' understanding and preparedness.
Moving forward, we will continue to keep you informed. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me or your child’s teacher. We welcome your input and are grateful for your partnership.
