St Bernadette's Primary School
NEWSLETTER | TERM 1 | WEEK 7 | 17 March 2023
Well, after a bit of a weather scare yesterday, I am really pleased to report that we had an excellent day at our Swimming Carnival today. It was great to welcome our Year 3’s into the action and I would like to congratulate all our students for the way they gave their best, encouraged each other and had a great time… This is what carnivals are all about! HUGE thanks to the parent volunteers, staff and especially to Kristy and Tara for organising the day and ensuring it all ran smoothly.
The Early Learning Year classes enjoyed their first Water Fun Day. Students arrived excited and couldn’t wait for their turn! The students enjoyed splashing in the pools, blowing and catching bubbles and running under the water. Thanks to the staff for getting involved and making the day what it was and thanks to the parents for being organised and sending your children in prepared ready to go!
We have had a really great response rate to our first of two rounds of Parent Teacher Interviews for 2023. These will start next week and are a great way to keep track of how your children are progressing both socially and academically. Our teachers put a lot of time and effort into being prepared for these meetings and we also encourage you to come armed with questions if you have them! A reminder that to keep it fair for all parents and running on time, meetings are kept to 10 minutes. I would also like to remind parents that communication is always encouraged here at Bernie’s, so if you ever feel like you need a discussion with the class teacher, make an appointment through the front office or shoot us an email. We want to work in partnership with you!
Next week our Year 6 gang and a group of staff (including myself) will be off to camp at Waroona. Forest Edge is an amazing spot with modern facilities, excellent activities, great food and really well-trained staff. We will be rock-climbing, target shooting, jumping from heights and flying through the air on zip lines.
Finally, a reminder to parents that while giving the kids a short play after school on the playground is ok, it is important that everyone is off by 3.30pm. If you do stay, please supervise your children closely and ensure they stay out of classrooms and the library. Our staff have found children ‘exploring’ inside without their parents a couple of times. The other issue we have is that our office staff work very hard during this time, so they leave on time and get home to their families. We do not have the time or resources to be providing first aid after school.
I hope you all have a great weekend; I will see you all next week!
Gospel Values Awards
Our St Bernadette’s values of kindness, honesty and respect will be celebrated in our new Gospel Values Awards. There will be two Gospel Values Award winners each term, one mid term and one at the end of the term. It is awarded to recipients who live out our school values just as Jesus taught us – even when no one is looking! Our Gospel Values Award recipients will receive a certificate, a Bernie’s bear bag tag and have their photo displayed in our school library Gospel Values photo frame.
This term, we are focusing on the value of kindness. Anyone in our school community can nominate a person to receive this prestigious award, staff, students, parents and family members of students. There is a nomination box in the library with nomination slips inside. So if you see an awesome act of kindness this term, go ahead and nominate that kind person!

Year 4 Excurson to Sculptures by the Sea
We got into the bus and went to Cottesloe. We looked at sculptures for the first half, and for the second half, we started drawing sculptures that we liked. I definitely liked it because we got to do some art. Dylan.
When we got there, it was very pretty. The sculptures were very beautiful. When I saw one of the sculptures, I actually felt like I was looking at it in real life. It was very lovely. I think that more kids from our school should see how beautiful the sculptures are and have fun there. Ian
It was interesting to look at the sculptures on the beach and see how old they were. It was fun to look around and see which one was our favourite . Rosie
It was fun, drawing our favourite sculptures and realising how amazing artists really are. Penelope.
We hopped on the bus and went to Cottesloe. When we hopped off it looked amazing, and all the sculptures were very detailed. My favourite one was Max from the book ‘Where The Wild Things Are’. We were reading that book in a lesson this week. Jax
A message from Mike, our crossing guard
The red lines on both sides of the school crossing have been re-spayed so a reminder for parents and children to please stop behind the lines and wait for me to blow two whistles.
Please also remember that bikes must give way to any pedestrians on the crossing.
Signing children in and out of school
We have returned to pre Covid procedures which means children are collected by their parents, from their classrooms. If you are collecting children before the end of school please come to the office for a leave pass which should then be given directly to the teacher.
PP - Year 6 Swimming Lessons 8 May 2023
The swimming notes have been sent out this week and we ask that these are returned to your classroom teacher by the end of Term 1.
On Wednesday 5 April we will be celebrating Bernie’s Friendship Day - through hosting a variety of activities to engage in the theme of “Everyone belongs”. This day is about celebrating the uniqueness of our students, teachers and wider community.
Facilitated by our whole school Friendology Program we aim to empower our students with friendships skills, to strengthen our culture of kindness and respect. Bernie’s Friendship Day, is an opportunity to celebrate our uniqueness and differences that make our community a place where we can thrive together and live in harmony.
Our Ministry and Well-Being Year 6 leaders, along with Ibu Kristy and Mrs Deshon have prepared many exciting activities! We can't wait to highlight how important inclusivity and friendship is amongst our rich, vibrant and diverse community.
Students are invited to wear orange for Harmony or Yellow for Friendship t-shirts as part of our celebrations, with their sports shorts. These can be items that you already have in the cupboard or you can order coloured shirts from https://www.ponytailsandfairytales.com.au/.
