Christopher Columbus
Christopher Columbus sailed west from Spain in 1492. He was looking for a westward passage to India because of the riches there and because he wanted to be famous.
He sailed across the Atlantic with three ships. He carried navigational tools, live animals to provide fresh food, and items for trading, like beads. The voyage took over a month, and the crew started to feel hopeless and wanted to mutiny, Finally they sighted land, but instead of India, Columbus had landed on an island off the coast of North America. He and his crew met with the Lucayan, a native tribe. He traded goods with them. Some of them used tobacco, which had never been seen in Europe before.
Columbus eventually made several voyages exploring many of the islands in the area. He met different tribes. Some were friendly and some were not. He converted some native to Christianity, and he took some natives as slaves.
