Calendar Updates
On the school-wide newsletter in today's folder you will see "April 9 School in Session" crossed out. Explanation for this is found below:
- Obviously, we were in school on 2/19 as our first official make-up day.
- We will observe our second make-up day on 5/7. The reason for using this day next is because 5/7 is the date of some AP testing for many high school students. AP testing dates are scheduled nationwide with little to no room for flexibility. It is in the best interest of our students to be in session on this day. Thanks to the weather, it made this adjustment somewhat seamless.
- This of course still leaves 4/9, as a “no school/snow make up” day. Fingers crossed that it remains a “no school” day!
ISTEP Updates
With the exception of a few make up tests, the first round of ISTEP is now in our rear view mirror. I just want to share with you how very proud I am of the kiddos. They showed remarkable stamina during these tests. They worked like troopers, and I literally had goosebumps while watching them in action. Now, it's on to the next state mandated test, IREAD, beginning the week of March 12. They have certainly enjoyed their words of motivation...and their daily testing treats. Several cards came in without names leading to a bit of confusion, but no worries. Every child received notes of encouragement, even if it was from someone else. We can't thank you enough for the many ways you've shown us support through these otherwise stressful days.
I-READ Test
As you probably will recall from our discussions during parent teacher conferences, the IREAD-3 test is a state test that all third graders must pass in order to move on to 4th grade. The test will be given the week of March 12. The most important information for you as a parent is that, if your child does not receive a passing score on the IREAD-3 test, it is required that he/she be retained in 3rd grade. Should your child not receive a passing score on the test taken in March, (s)he will have the opportunity to retake the test at the beginning of summer break. There are waivers for some students. If students have already been retained TWICE, they may be passed on to 4th grade even if they do not pass the IREAD-3 test. Also, if students have been qualified with a disability, their case conference team may decide to promote them regardless of the results of the IREAD-3 test. Naturally, It is our goal that every child succeed in passing the IREAD-3 test.
I don't know about you, but I'd be just fine with removing the word "test" from my life for a little while.
Iditarod!!!!!!
The third graders have been waiting all year for this week. The Iditarod 1,049 sled dog race begins on Saturday. Each student has selected and has intensely researched his or her musher, or sled driver, to follow throughout the race. They have assembled a unique data binder where they'll be figuring elapsed time, mileage traveled, etc. They've even had a crash course on converting standard time to military time, as this is the way official times are reported out during the race. Each team can be tracked via a GPS tracking system and your child is able to check the mushers status on weekends and evenings during the race by visiting the Iditarod race center. Ask your child what bib number his or her musher is sporting during the race.
Basket Bash
The LES PTO's biggest fundraiser of the year is launching: Basket Bash! The PTO is once again asking for parental support with this fun event. Please find detailed information about the bash in your child's Friday folder today. If you're able to make this generous contribution, we will need all money turned in by Friday, March 23.
Next Week's Share Topic
Free Choice!!!!! You may share whatever you choose as long as the topic has been discussed with your parents, is appropriately addressed, and has been practiced (just as should be done during regular share presentations).
