Barre Blast
June 21, 2016
Greetings from RLS!
At Ruggles, it is our consummate goal to develop a passion for reading within our children. We do this because we want to develop a love of reading so our students can find joy in escaping into a good book. We also do this because we know that passionate readers are more successful on their educational journeys. The research supports this belief as study after study shows a positive correlation between time spent reading and success in school.
In each of our small learning communities, students spend time independently reading each day. It is an integral part of our approach to developing passionate readers. One way in which we do this is to foster a community of readers at Ruggles. We celebrate reading successes, we talk about books, we recommend books to one another and we even dress up like our favorite book characters! All of these things serve to foster a vibrant community of readers.
We would like to extend our community of readers into the summer months and encourage each student to continue their voracious reading habits through the following opportunities:
Book Swap: Because of the generosity of this community, each student was able to go home with at least one book from our Book Swap. Each Wednesday from 9-2 you and your children can visit our Book Swap in the Library. Bring in gently used books to swap for new to you books.
Book Recommendation Blog: In addition, we would like to continue the conversation about books we love through Facebook and our school blog. Students are encouraged to email me as they finish books and write a short book review that includes whether you recommend it to another student and for what age. Students can also write an old fashioned letter or a postcard with their entries. I promise to write everyone back too! Each entry will be added to our summer reading book recommendation list on our school blog as well as to Facebook.
With each entry, a child's name will be entered into a contest to be Principal for the Day - there will be a K-2 Principal and a 3-6 Principal on the day of our first all-school community meeting. One name from each grade will also be drawn to go shopping with Ms. V for a new, free book at the fall Book Fair. The more reviews you write, the greater the chance it to win!

2nd Annual Book Character Day
To end our reading adventure for this school year, and to launch summer reading excitement, K-2 will be participating in a "Book Character Day" again this year. Students and staff are encouraged to dress-up like their favorite book characters for the day. They will have the opportunity to do a "Book Talk" to share about their character and book. This will be a fun way to celebrate all our hard work, as well as to launch summer reading!
