Years 12 and 13 "Maths Inspiration" talks at the Hexagon, Reading - Tues 28 February

On Tuesday, twenty Year 12 and 13 mathematicians enjoyed a collection of talks by very entertaining and knowledgeable mathematicians at The Hexagon in Reading as part of The Maths Inspiration Lectures. One speaker, Steve Mould, demonstrated that wheels do not need to be circular, how to find how many numbers in the universe start with 1 and most amazingly demonstrated a phenomenon he discovered 4 years ago, now called the Mould effect in which strings of metal beads create a self perpetuating fountain . Click on this link to witness it for yourself.

The second speaker, Sammie Buzzard, a researcher from Reading university explained how she uses maths to predict the future of Antarctica by modelling the melting of polar ice caps in the face of global warming. The third speaker Ben Sparks combined his mathematical and musical skills to describe the "hidden laws" of probability that govern poker and what it is that really makes "numbers dance". The host for the morning was Matt Parker, a well known TV and radio presenter who engaged us with the way π occurs not just in circles but in pendulums, and strangely as a series of fractions. Todd Muil commented "The talk by Matt Parker about Pi was very interesting and really boosted my passion for maths." Watch Matt's you tube video here.

After the talks some of our pupils had the opportunity to chat and have photos with Matt Parker. Emily King, Colette Ferguson and Flora Gault are pictured here with Matt Parker.

Visiting Speakers - Tues 7 March

On Tuesday, Simon Jacobs from Amplifiy Trading will be coming to speak to Sixth Form at 3.30pm in HM4. Amplify Trading will be allowing the Sixth Form to work with their specialist software that allows students to become portfolio managers, to trade past events, trade real time events and act as both the Investment bank and hedge fund in a trading environment. The emphasis is of bridging the gap between theory in the classroom and the real world and should be most interesting to those students interested in a future career in the Financial sector.

Ed Pawsey - Careers in the Army

Ed Pawsey came into school this week to speak to specific students who had previously expressed an interest in careers within the Army. Ed sees the students every few months to help them with any career planning. One of our Year 12s, Harry Ould, who is now booked on the training day at Sandhurst Academy in the summer, said that Ed had helped to give him some direction and focus for the longer term which had a positive effect on helping him to concentrate on his studies.

Helen Cole - Year 12 talk

Helen Cole came into Year 12 assembly today to give a presentation on "Alternatives to Higher Education". It was good for the Year 12s to be able to see that there are other routes than university after Claires Court and they now know where to go to access the information. Helen included many useful websites in her presentation and these can be found on the school hub. If anyone would like to speak to Helen about careers, please see Mrs Rogers to arrange an appointment.
