January Newsletter
News & Notes
December was an extremely busy month. Our annual holiday concert was a huge success, our new Maker Space was launched, and Santa's Workshop allowed students to buy affordable gifts for the special people in their lives.
Mrs. Gallagher and I would like to thank everyone for their thoughtful gifts, messages & cards heading into the holidays. We are both constantly amazed by the giving spirit of our community. Here's wishing you a fantastic January!

MAKERSPACE
We are looking for volunteers from our Selby School community who would be willing to help us in the "Maker Space" this winter and spring. We would like to run month-long sessions, twice each week for interested students, with a focus on the following skills:
- sewing (both hand and with a machine)
- cooking and baking
- movie making
- sound recording
- knitting / crocheting
- carpentry
- programming and coding
- working with electricity/electronics
- works of art both 2 and 3 dimensional
- robotics
- photography
- book making
We will supply the materials and tools (for the most part) we just need your expertise and guidance! We would ask for your help once or twice per week (depending on the number of volunteers) from 11:00 to 12:00 or from 1:00 to 2:00, for one month (we will select the months as we receive responses). You will require a valid CPIC in order to volunteer (these can be obtained free of charge with a form from Mrs. Gallagher).
We would really love to have our extended family and community join us in this endeavor! Students are eager to get started in the space and look forward to learning from you!
If you would like to volunteer your time, or if you know someone who is interested, please contact the school and leave your name, number and area of expertise. You can send a note with your child or contact the office.
Thank you so much for your help!

SCHOOL YEAR CALENDAR SURVEY
The Limestone District School Board is requesting feedback about the 2017-18 school year calendar and possible options for the 2018-19 school year. It would be appreciated if you would please take a moment to respond to several questions on an on-line survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/P6HZL3L . If you would like a paper version of the survey, please contact the school and we can send a copy home with your child, or you could come into the school to fill it out. The survey is open for responses until Friday, Feb. 9th. Your input is important to us and we appreciate your time in submitting your feedback and comments. For more information, please visit the LDSB website at http://www.limestone.on.ca/School_Calendar which also provides a link to the Ministry of Education website.
ONLINE REGISTRATION IS COMING TO LIMESTONE!
The Limestone District School Board is excited to introduce online registration for our families in the new year. New families or those returning to our district will soon be able to register online to attend school via our new online registration process. The new online tool will allow families to search their home address which will then provide the school catchment, or boundary, for their area and determine which school their child is eligible to attend.
All information provided through the online process is secure and will be confidentially transferred to the school for review to complete the registration process.
Accommodations will be made to help families navigate the new process should they require assistance. The new online registration will be launched in February 2018. Watch for more details coming soon.

PARENT COUNCIL
Please consider joining our Parent Council this year! Parent Council is an essential part of our school community. They fund-raise tirelessly for our school which allows us to greatly improve the learning environment for our students. They put on exciting events, and are involved in important discussions about Selby Public School. They represent the voice of our parent community.
Our next meeting is Thursday, January 18th, at 6:00 pm. Babysitting will be provided! While the Council very much needs members who can volunteer at events and help out with fund-raising, anyone is welcome to attend meetings, even if it's just to listen. We hope to see you soon!
Parent Council have started a Facebook page for sharing information - please "like" it at https://www.facebook.com/selbyschoolPAC/ to receive updates.
