Orana Catholic Primary School
Term1 Week 6
TO GIVE IS TO RECEIVE
Our community values an attitude of enthusiastically applying energy and effort to become better learners. Excellence is evident when:
• we do our best to develop our talents and share them with others
• we have high expectations of what we can achieve
• we take risks and experiment with the way we learn
• we work hard to do our best work
• we celebrate our achievements
Prayer for Optimism
O God,
We end this week with the prayer for optimism. Help us to understand that our human tendency to see failure at every turn is not an attitude that is healthy or good for us. When the projects for the week to come seem unsurmountable, help us to “just start” and trust that the little step of faith will bring continued success. Help us to lay aside fear of failure and embrace trust in the process of just putting one foot ahead of the other. When we think we are alone in our struggle and no one knows life quite like we do, show us how beautiful and wondrous life can be for us today, if we just adopt an optimistic attitude about life.
Amen
Dear Parents and Carers,
As we navigate another week of challenge and change, we take strength from the prayer above. Children are naturally optimistic and tend to expect the best out of their experiences. We can all learn from our children’s positive outlook of the world. As significant adults in the lives of our children, we can help to nurture optimism. “Children who practise optimistic thinking are more resilient, they are less likely to give up in the face of challenge and they tend to interpret experiences in a way that gives them a sense of control and confidence.”
If you are interested in reading more on how to encourage optimism, please have a look at this article.
As you are fully aware the number of covid cases in the community is rapidly rising. I would like to acknowledge and thank-you for your ongoing support of our school community. Now that cases are becoming regular in our community, the year level and class affected will be notified, along with any identified close contacts. Individual medical information is confidential and can not be shared. From Friday 18th March, non-identifying, whole school correspondence will now be summarised in the newsletter at the end of each week. This will be an effective method of keeping families informed, whilst avoiding multiple daily correspondence from the school. Please be rest assured that we will support and work with families of confirmed cases and close contacts to ensure learning continuity and pastoral care.
This week the Year 4 students attended swimming trials in preparation for the swimming carnival. At this stage, we are so fortunate that the carnival should be able to go ahead. This is due to the diligence and hardwork of Miss Tayla Dennett. Tayla has spent countless hours sourcing an alternative outdoor venue; reorganising buses and discussing covid safe plans with the venue. Please understand that for this event to go ahead, covid safe protocols must be closely adhered to. Some changes have had to be made to comply with both the venue, CEWA and WA Health directions. For example, staff will fill the roles that in the past parent helpers have assisted with and the spectators’ area will be separate from the student area. Students will be in class groups rather than in their house bays. Please be patient and mindful of the additional pressures on our staff during this challenging time.
Enrolment interviews for 2023 Kindergarten places will be held later this term. The format will be slightly altered to adhere to Covid safe protocols. If you have a child who was born between July 1, 2018 and June 30, 2019, please contact Deb Goodwin, our enrolment officer or use the website link below, as soon as possible to secure a place. https://www.orana.wa.edu.au/admissions/
Current Pre-Kindergarten students will be contacted early in Term 2.
A Term 1 Planner is available on the website under News and Events – Calendars or via the following link: https://www.orana.wa.edu.au/calendar Please regularly check the Dates to Remember section of the newsletter for updates.
God bless and stay safe.

Covid-19 Updates
Thank-you for your support in adhering to the current Covid-19 restrictions. From Friday 18th March, non-identifying, whole school correspondence will now be summarised in the newsletter at the end of each week. This will be an effective method of keeping families informed, whilst avoiding multiple daily correspondence from the school. All updates are located on our website for ease of reference. There is a new section showing WA Health Advice.
Faith in Action
Project Compassion 2022
This year’s theme for Project Compassion is For Future Generations. All classes have been provided with a Project Compassion box and we ask that you generously donate to this worthy cause during Lent. Did you know that $6 can provide soap and a tippy tap to protect communities against COVID-19 in the Democratic Republic of Congo or that $25 can provide a duck for a Rural Training School in the Solomon Islands? Please click on the link below to view Biru’s story, showing Project Compassion in action and highlighting how our generosity can assist others.
Harmony Week 2022
Harmony Week celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity. It focusses on inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. The theme is EVERYONE BELONGS. Orana will be celebrating this important week from Tuesday 15th March - 21st March, with each class participating in special activities. On Monday 21st March, students may wear their sports uniform. As orange is the official Harmony Week colour, students may also wear an orange t-shirt if they have one, and/or suitable orange accessories.
Keep a lookout for something special on Monday 21st March!

What is the Element - Culture?
All members of the school community share responsibility for, and actively promote an environment that prioritises the best interests of children and young people.
What Does this Element looks like at school?
* Teachers and staff recognise a child and young adult’s right to a safe, engaging and supportive environment.
*Child safety is a responsibility shared by everyone in schools and across CEWA.
*Standardised, quality training is provided to understand the indicators of child maltreatment, e.g. Child Protection Policy and Mandatory Reporting training
*Child safe policies and practices are in place to ensure that unsafe behaviour is recognised and reported.
*There is a culture where children and young adults can raise concerns without worry.
*Parents are treated as partners in child safety and have access to information and support on all aspects of child safety.
*Parents, children and young adults are included in the development of policies, procedures and models of service.
*Staff protect and respect a child or young adult’s cultural and spiritual identity and help to support and preserve their family and community connection.
*Staff actively seek to identify and eliminate racism and discrimination.
*Staff feel confident to identify and present concerns about child safety activities and practices.
*There operates a culture of trust and openness where practice is supervised, discussed, questioned and improved.

Participating in a daily Crunch&Sip break provides an opportunity for children to drink water and eat an extra serve of vegetables or fruit to support good health and to help with learning and concentration in the classroom.
